Hive Voluntary Service is the world’s first international volunteer program fully funded through blockchain. We have just completed a pilot project as part of which Adil (@blind-spot) from Almere in the Netherlands spent just under two weeks in Kraków, volunteering at the Kingdom Without Limit (@krolestwo) in Kraków. All costs — including accommodation, food, and transportation — were paid with HBD tokens. The uniqueness of this project lies in the fact that the cryptocurrency we used was not converted into fiat currencies. No dollars, euros, or zlotys! All payments were made directly in HBD (using the V4V application created by @brianoflondon).
First volunteer
The pilot project involved Adil, who first came to @krolestwo in March 2022, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As a war refugee from Kharkiv, with the help of the Hive community, he found shelter in Kraków, where he stayed for two weeks. He then left for the Netherlands, where he first volunteered in various aid activities for refugees and now works for a non-governmental organization. We decided that his extensive experience in community work and his previous involvement in promoting Hive would be extremely valuable for our project.
Project goals
Our project had three main objectives.
- First, to show people who are part of the Kingdom but do not blog that Hive is a real, global community and not a bot farm. In the age of AI, it is difficult to distinguish what is real from what is generated. That is why we believed that the long-term presence of a Hive volunteer would be invaluable. Two weeks were enough for almost everyone to meet Adil, talk with him, and do something good together. For the same reason, we organized @hivebeecon on November 14–16, which on its main day gathered over 80 people.
- Second, Adil arrived at the Kingdom with a clearly defined mission: to conduct an audit and propose solutions that would improve the Kingdom in light of the constantly growing attendance and the challenges that come with it. We received many valuable comments and recommendations, which will be implemented, tested, and modified if necessary.
- Third, the promotion of Hive. For years, the Kingdom has been showing blockchain as a tool that solves many problems faced by non-governmental organizations. HVS is another excellent example of this. This is especially important now, when market sentiment is negative and many people are doubting this technology. We show that it works regardless of the price. An additional aspect we wanted to demonstrate was the fact that, thanks to various tools, it is currently possible to live in Poland almost 100% on a decentralized stablecoin such as HBD — without going through KYC and without the need to have accounts on exchanges.
Project timeline
The original plan was for the volunteer work to last 15 days. Unfortunately, a few days before the start of the project, it turned out that Adil had a very important meeting in the Netherlands on November 10, so we had to postpone the first activities to November 11. It is worth adding that in order to come to Kraków, he had to take time off work. He could have spent that time relaxing in Madeira, living on crypto. Instead, he chose the Kingdom and unpaid work.
Over the course of 12 days, Adil was involved in many different activities:
- In the first stage, he joined the preparations for HiveBeeCon. One of the biggest challenges at the time was getting the workshop ready for use. Adil helped move things, collected supplies, and created and hosted a quiz during the event.
- He participated in volunteer meetings. One of them was led by him according to the standards he proposed to implement at the Kingdom.
- He conducted an audit. He observed and documented processes that, in his opinion, were not working as they should. He wrote down all suggestions, which now allows us to work on them.
- Adil created also a volunteer management tool that we had never managed to build before due to lack of time.
- Together with @mynewlife, he documented payments made using HBD.
- He initiated the creation of a new Instagram profile (using.hive), where we show how we use Hive in the Kingdom. For this purpose, we recorded a lot of material for future reels.
HiveBeeCon
One of the elements of the project was the second edition of @hivebeecon. The first one took place in 2023 and was limited to a single day. At that time, the Kingdom was visited by 43 people. Events like this, however, require a lot of effort, which is why another HiveBeeCon was not initially planned for this year. Adil’s volunteer project changed our plans. With the additional help, we decided to organize a second edition — and as expected, it was twice as big as the one two years ago.
Over the three days of the event, we had 90 guests, including: @akipponn, @alessandrawhite, @alicjamendrek, @andablackwidow, @annakraska, @asia-pl, @blind-spot, @bogdang, @czyzu, @danxios, @deepresearch, @dobranoc, @engrave, @ergorg89, @foggymeadow, @hleblazovik17, @gtg, @hallmann, @itsola, @jocieprosza, @jojovi, @lilithu, @mipiano, @maciejweigt, @mendrekola, @mtyszczak, @mynewlife, @oabdelmetaal, @onurgunes, @osavi, @ph1102, @prawdawtvmowili, @rlip, @rumunpanda, @small.minion, @szmulkberg, @wayward-dreams, @valhus and @xara. It was therefore probably the largest Hive event in Europe this year.
Funding
The project was fully funded from the Kingdom’s own resources deposited in the Development Fund (@fundacja) and the Benevolent Fund (@hive.aid). The total budget we managed to collect amounted to 1,100 HBD (800 HBD for accommodation and 300 HBD for other expenses). The unused 9.626 HBD was returned by @blind-spot to the @hive.aid account.
Summary
There are very few non-governmental organizations in the world that use blockchain. In Poland, they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. What’s more, all of them limit its use solely to crowdfunding. The exception is the Kingdom, which uses blockchain on many different levels. It is therefore not surprising that the Hive Voluntary Service program was initiated here. The first pilot project showed that combining a blockchain community and technology can produce very good results. We managed to achieve something that seemed impossible — to carry out an international volunteer project without the bureaucracy typical of similar programs financed by the European Union. The twelve days of support provided by Adil brought unexpectedly good results. Even during the project, we improved numerous processes. And it will get even better because the implementation of the team management system should solve many of our problems related to the sudden increase in attendance.
The experiment that just a few years ago seemed impossible also succeeded. All costs were covered directly in HBD, without converting to fiat. On top of all this comes the promotion of Hive. Thanks to Adil’s presence and the organization of HiveBeeCon, more people learned about Hive. We can therefore state without hesitation: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Paradoxically, however, the biggest work is still ahead of us. And I don’t even mean the entire implementation process of the system prepared by Adil. The results of this project are already amazing. It was really worth taking this challenge! The most important thing, however, is that once again @krolestwo proved that blockchain can solve real problems faced by non-governmental organizations. We now have another case study in a sector that is still far away from cryptocurrencies, yet one that brings together a huge number of people — over 8 million in Poland alone. Proper promotion of such examples can therefore bring unimaginable benefits to Hive. This is our next challenge. Let’s get to work!

Hive Voluntary Service to pierwszy na świecie międzynarodowy program wolontariatu sfinansowany całkowicie dzięki blockchainowi. Właśnie zakończyliśmy pilotażowy projekt, w ramach którego Adil (@blind-spot) z Almere w Holandii spędził niecałe dwa tygodnie w Krakowie pomagając jako wolontariusz w Królestwie Bez Kresu (@krolestwo) w Krakowie. Wszystkie koszty, takie jak zakwaterowanie, wyżywienie, przejazdy, opłacone zostały tokenami HBD. Unikalność projektu polega na tym, że kryptowaluta, której użyliśmy nie była zamieniana na waluty fiducjarne. Żadnych dolarów, euro czy złotówek! Wszystkie płatności dokonywane były bezpośrednio w HBD (przy użyciu aplikacji V4V stworzonej przez @brianoflondon).
Pierwszy wolontariusz
W pilotażowym projekcie wziął udział Adil, który pierwszy raz trafił do @krolestwo w marcu 2022 roku, niedługo po inwazji Rosji na Ukrainę. Jako uchodźca wojenny z Charkowa, dzięki pomocy społeczności Hive, znalazł schronienie w Krakowie, gdzie mieszkał przez dwa tygodnie. Następnie wyjechał do Holandii, gdzie najpierw był wolontariuszem w ramach różnych działań pomocowych skierowanych do uchodźców, a obecnie pracuje w organizacji pozarządowej. Uznaliśmy, że jego bogate doświadczenie w działalności społecznej oraz dotychczasowe zaangażowanie w promocję Hive będzie bardzo pomocne podczas naszego projektu.
Cele projektu
Nasz projekt miał trzy główne cele.
- Po pierwsze, pokazanie osobom, które są częścią Królestwa, ale nie blogują, że Hive to realna, globalna społeczność a nie farma botów. W czasach AI trudno odróżnić coś co jest prawdziwe od tego, co jest wygenerowane. Dlatego uznaliśmy, że obecność wolontariusza Hive przez dłuższy czas będzie nieoceniona. Dwa tygodnie wystarczyły, aby prawie każdy mógł poznać Adila, porozmawiać z nim i wspólnie zrobić coś dobrego. Z tego samego względu zorganizowaliśmy w dniach 14-16 listopada @hivebeecon, który w głównym dniu zgromadził ponad 80 osób.
- Po drugie, Adil przybył do Królestwa z jasno określoną misją: zrobić audyt i zaproponować rozwiązania, które usprawnią Królestwo w obliczu ciągle rosnącej frekwencji i związanych z nią wyzwań. Otrzymaliśmy wiele cennych uwag i zaleceń, które zostaną wdrożone, przetestowane i zmodyfikowane, jeśli będzie taka potrzeba.
- Po trzecie, promocja Hive. Królestwo od lat pokazuje blockchain jako narzędzie rozwiązujące wiele problemów organizacji pozarządowych. HVS jest kolejnym doskonałym przykładem. Jest to szczególnie ważne teraz, gdy sentyment na rynku jest negatywny i wiele osób wątpi w tę technologię. My pokazujemy, że ona działa niezależnie od ceny. Dodatkowym aspektem, który chcieliśmy pokazać był fakt, że dzięki różnym narzędziom można obecnie w Polsce niemal w 100% żyć za zdecentralizowanego stablecoina jakim jest HBD. Bez przechodzenia procesu KYC i konieczności posiadania kont na giełdach.
Przebieg projektu
Pierwotny plan zakładał, że wolontariat potrwa 15 dni. Niestety kilka dni przed rozpoczęciem projektu okazało się, że 10 listopada Adil ma w Holandii bardzo ważne spotkanie i pierwsze działania musimy przesunąć na 11 listopada. Warto tu dodać, że aby przyjechać do Krakowa musiał wziąć urlop w pracy. Mógł więc spędzić ten czas odpoczywając za crypto na Maderze. Wybrał jednak Królestwo i pracę za darmo.
W ciągu 12 dni Adil zajmował się wieloma różnymi rzeczami:
- W pierwszym etapie dołączył do przygotowań do HiveBeeConu. Jednym z większych wyzwań było wtedy oddanie do użytku pracowni. Adil pomagał przenosić rzeczy, odbierał zaopatrzenie oraz stworzył i przeprowadził podczas wydarzenia quiz.
- Uczestniczył w spotkaniach wolontariuszy. Jedno z nich poprowadził zgodnie ze standardami, jakie zaproponował do wdrożenia w Królestwie.
- Przeprowadził audyt. Obserwował i odnotowywał procesy, które jego zdaniem nie działają tak jak powinny. Wszystkie sugestie spisał i dzięki temu możemy nad nimi pracować.
- Stworzył narzędzie do zarządzania pracą wolontariuszy, którego z powodu braku czasu nigdy wcześniej nie udało się stworzyć.
- Razem z @mynewlife dokumentował płatności z wykorzystaniem HBD.
- Zainicjował stworzenie nowego profilu na Instagramie (using.hive), na którym pokazujemy jak wykorzystujemy Hive w Królestwie. W tym celu nagraliśmy sporo materiału pod przyszłe rolki.
HiveBeeCon
Jednym z elementów projektu była druga edycja @hivebeecon'u. Pierwsza odbyła się w 2023 roku i ograniczyła się do jednego dnia. Królestwo odwiedziły wtedy 43 osoby. Tego typu wydarzenia wiążą się jednak ze sporym wysiłkiem, dlatego początkowo kolejny HiveBeeCon nie był planowany w tym roku. Wolontariat Adila zmienił plany. Z dodatkową pomocą zdecydowaliśmy się na organizację drugiej edycji. No i zgodnie z przewidywaniami był on dwa razy większy niż ten sprzed dwóch lat.
Przez trzy dni imprezy mieliśmy 90 gości, wśród nich: @akipponn, @alessandrawhite, @alicjamendrek, @andablackwidow, @annakraska, @asia-pl, @blind-spot, @bogdang, @czyzu, @danxios, @deepresearch, @dobranoc, @engrave, @ergorg89, @foggymeadow, @hleblazovik17, @gtg, @hallmann, @itsola, @jocieprosza, @jojovi, @lilithu, @mipiano, @maciejweigt, @mendrekola, @mtyszczak, @mynewlife, @oabdelmetaal, @onurgunes, @osavi, @ph1102, @prawdawtvmowili, @rlip, @rumunpanda, @small.minion, @szmulkberg, @wayward-dreams, @valhus i @xara. Była to więc prawdopodobnie największa europejska impreza Hive w tym roku.
Finansowanie
Projekt został całkowicie sfinansowany ze środków własnych Królestwa zdeponowanych w Funduszu Rozwojowym (@fundacja) i Funduszu Dobroczynnym (@hive.aid). Całkowity budżet, jaki udało nam się zgromadzić wyniósł 1100 HBD (800 HBD na zakwaterowanie i 300 HBD na inne wydatki). Niewykorzystane 9.626 HBD @blind-spot zwrócił na konto @hive.aid.
Podsumowanie
Organizacji pozarządowych wykorzystujących blockchain jest na świecie bardzo mało. W Polsce można je policzyć na palcach jednej ręki. Co więcej, wszystkie ograniczają się tylko i wyłącznie do crowdfundingu. Wyjątkiem jest Królestwo, które używa blockchainu na wielu różnych płaszczyznach. Nic więc dziwnego, że to właśnie tutaj zainicjowany został program Hive Voluntary Service. Pierwszy pilotażowy projekt pokazał, że połączenie blockchainowej społeczności i technologii może dać bardzo dobre efekty. Udało nam się coś co wydawało się niemożliwe - zrealizować międzynarodowy projekt wolontariatu bez biurokracji właściwej dla analogicznych programów finansowanych przez Unię Europejską. Dwanaście dni pomocy, które dał nam Adil, przyniosło nadspodziewanie dobre efekty. Jeszcze w trakcie trwania projektu usprawniliśmy liczne procesy. A będzie jeszcze lepiej, bo wdrożenie systemu zarządzania zespołem powinno rozwiązać wiele naszych problemów związanych z nagłym wzrostem frekwencji.
Udał się również eksperyment, który jeszcze kilka lat temu wydawał się niemożliwy. Wszystkie koszty pokryte zostały bezpośrednio w HBD, bez wychodzenia do fiatów. Do tego wszystkiego dochodzi kwestia promocji Hive. Dzięki obecności Adila i zorganizowaniu HiveBeeConu kolejne osoby dowiedziały się o Hive. Możemy więc bez wahania stwierdzić: MISJA WYKONANA!
Paradoksalnie jednak największa praca dopiero przed nami. I nie mam tu nawet na myśli całego procesu wdrożenia systemu przygotowanego przez Adila. Efekty tego projektu już teraz są niesamowite. Naprawdę warto było podjąć to wyzwanie! Najważniejsze jest jednak to, że po raz kolejny @krolestwo udowodniło, że blockchain może rozwiązywać realne problemy organizacji pozarządowych. Mamy więc kolejny case study w sektorze, który wciąż jest daleko od krytowalut, a który gromadzi ogromną liczbę osób. W samej Polsce jest to ponad 8 milionów. Odpowiednie nagłośnienie takich przykładów może więc przynieść niewyobrażalne korzyści dla Hive. To nasze kolejne wyzwanie. Do dzieła!

Hive literally is capable of providing the abilities requisite to voluntarist governance, and similarly enables NGO's, too. But Hive also enables political enemies and competitors to tax governments and NGO's alike to the limit of stake held by the Downvoter without restriction whatsoever. No NGO that faces political opposition could expose itself to such potential abuse. Without limits on the ability of stakeholders to tax posts, no such users vulnerable to politics and political opposition will be able to use Hive to achieve their purposes. That's why user retention is so bad on Hive, and Steem before it. ~1M users onboarded, learned how to post, vote, use their keys, and were excited about the platform after April 2017. Less than 10k of them remain today. Almost all of them left because of taxation limited only by the stake of the downvoter able to be applied to their earnings at the whim of any stakeholder.
Imagine Ford could tax Toyota 100% of the sale price of every truck Toyota sold. Toyota would sell no trucks. Ford would sell no trucks. No one would sell any products whatsoever IRL if their enemies or competitors could DV them as stakeholders can on Hive.
Unlimited taxation is intolerable, on Hive just as much as IRL. Personally, I think taxation is theft. I'm agin' it completely.
That is so awesome! It really shows the freedom and prosperity Hive has the potential to enable. And that ability will continue to be possible until the EU,and probably Poland, impose digital ID requirements to use the internet. Because Hive is almost exclusively transacted over the internet, that imposition of KYC just to go on the internet will end that heady freedom today possible in Poland.
It will be sad when authoritarian governments like the EU, Poland, and the US will all but eradicate financial freedom by imposing KYC requirements to use the internet. It's too bad we don't have an alternative, like Reticulum, that would enable Hive users to communicate with one another at their sole option and whim, without any tyrant demanding to read all their messages, record all their transactions, and censor or ban anything the tyrant disapproves of.
All the good Hive, HVS, and blockchain can do cannot be done without a physical network infrastructure that can't be censored, because we know such censorship is coming from the EU, from the US, and probably from Poland too.
No matter how wonderful, how pregnant with potential someone is, all of their good work can be destroyed by just one little hole through their heart. Hive has not one, but two fatal weaknesses that can utterly prevent it's utility for any purpose, no matter how good: potential taxation of 100% of all rewards on posts and comments, and not having a secure communications mechanism, a physical infrastructure communications and transactions can use without threat of censorship. Both of those weaknesses are potential threats to HVS, to HiveBeeCon, and to the Kingdom Without Limits, just as they threaten every Hive user.
Sounds like you guys are really doing great work. I wish it couldn't be wiped out at the whim of a substantial stakeholder that disagrees with you, or just wants to wreck something good. Perhaps securing your endeavors from those threats should be undertaken before all your good work is destroyed.
