What Does Hive Mean To Me?

in #hive6 years ago

HIVE means a chance to start again, only with the wisdom gained from past experience.

I forget who this paraphrased quote comes from, but essentially it's that success comes from failing again and again without quitting.

Want to succeed more? Fail faster.

I think that's the gist of it, though it's not entirely appropos, since I don't consider the STEEM experience to have been a failure. It was more like an experiment that yielded a useful result.

Now we know what happens in dPOS when a dictator buys a controlling stake.

Now we know what happens when we allow a party to control a massive ninja mined stake with only a handshake contract that it will be used to benefit the community, not control it.

Now we know what happens when Communism trumps Community governance. We better understand why decentralization matters. We realize that censorship is always a real threat, even if we don't perceive ourselves as lawbreakers, that the idea of "law" can shift beneath us while we were busy focusing on other things.

We also have the benefit of starting with downvoting in place. Take a look at how successful (NOT) Haejin has been at raping the rewards pool here.

So Now?

Well now, having digested these lessons, I'm ready to 100% focus on HIVE blockchain. I am no longer active on STEEM, though I haven't figured out how to turn off my curation trail following for that blockchain without also turning it off for HIVE. Is that possible on SteemAuto yet? Is there an alternative yet that is only HIVE?

Anyway, onward and upward.

For the first time I've been actively reaching out to neighborhood community groups where I live and urging them to create communities on HIVE. I'm offering free tutelage to any who request it.

I'm also in the process of creating newbie training videos for getting started well on HIVE. These won't be focused on people leaving STEEM. Training will be focused on people leaving Facebook, etc. and completely new to blogging on a blockchain and being paid in crypto.

The preliminary syllabus is as follows:

Video Lesson 1 - Getting Started Well

  • Settings: Setup Your Profile
  • Searching and selecting people to follow
  • Commenting before Posting

Video Lesson 2 - Participating Productively

  • Curating & Rewarding (Upvoting) content
  • Writing your Introduce Yourself Post (Using markdown/markup, citing sources)
  • Joining Communities

Video Lesson 3 - Money Matters

  • Increasing your Payouts
  • Managing Your Wallet (powerup/down, buying, selling, msgs)

Video Lesson 4 - Important Miscellaneous

  • Voting for Witnesses
  • Useful Tools (Discord communities, Engage communication mgr, stats tool)

I'm planning to use @PeakD as the primary UI in the videos, so waiting for them to make some upcoming UI changes before I record, so as not to confuse folks too much with screens looking different from the training videos.

In case you're wondering why I'm taking this on, I've done quite a lot of online training over the years, having previously been a full-time software trainer and also being supported by online courses for many years now. I feel quite up to the task and plan on making truly professional training videos for the community, though it will take me a full-time effort for a couple weeks and I'm making the material available for free. That's how enthused I feel about HIVE.

(That said, I'm always open to input, so if you feel anything truly essential in the startup path is missing in the above syllabus, please let me know in the comments below. High fives also welcome 😀)

#Hiveimpact is something I believe in. HIVE is something whose time has come. While so many in-person communities are trying to figure out how to continue in the COVID19 era, HIVE is here to not only keep us connected, but facilitate new ways of expanding the very idea of what community means and what activity has financial value.

If you're new to HIVE and reading this: Welcome to Hive. I look forward to being in community with you.

I love your idea, I believe they will be very useful to the community and to the people who are unsure why/how/if they will try something they do not feel comfortable with.
Looking forward for your updates (perhaps we could also translate them :))
Stay safe!

I love the idea of translation.

I like your initial of your creating training videos to newbies on hive. I suffered for lack of it on steem when I joined years back

Yeah, I wish I'd had it too!

Your explanations are very clear and easy to understand to "rookies" like me. May the force be with you. 🙂

Thanks, and nice to "meet" you.

I appreciate you doing this! I’m new and it’s honestly a bit rattling stepping into this. Feels like starting a new job. I’ll def be checking out the training stuff! Thank you !

You're most welcome. And welcome to HIVE!
