Intro

Intended as a simple guide which ran still into too many words. Zero apologies for inaccuracies, although do tell me any glaring omissions so they may be corrected. Some familiarity and understanding of the high level concepts, tokens, exchange etc will help, these activities can also teach by real-life example.

Before You Go Any Further

Prerequisite for the following is you already got the HIVE Keychain browser extension and have setup your keys, plus some experience of it's features such as managing your funds and accepting signing requests. First, this tool makes logging into all the platforms easy and allows you to move around them with your single wallet. You are then ready to interact with all an ever-growing list of websites, services, dapps, games, and other innovations with your single HIVE blockchain account.

Go to https://hive-keychain.com/ to setup your wallet.

'Drink Me'

Our feeds are full of posts about different dApps, tokens, games and NFT initiatives on HIVE. Yet sometimes trying to see how they work or how we can play can lead to complexity and seem daunting. Can we simplify that, by taking a couple of core services from which we can access all others. This is an attempt to at least give you some ideas to start exploring ...

For us, it was the concept of dCity which led us to start this post. More on that later.

Hope this may be useful to anyone who's feeling a little overwhelmed by it all! The information and activities below aim to be enough to get anyone going down their own 'rabbit hole'. There is already endless possibilities as a user, so we leave it open-ended as to how you continue.

Soon learning that if only we had some 'SIM' tokens, this game might be more economical!

Skipping the Basics

You already know that HIVE is a blockchain, that users can create their own tokens, (albeit on hive-engine sidechain), and devs can build software around the tokens, aka 'dApps'. You just want to know how to get going with it ... furthermore, an excellent pointer to an FAQ is coming up.

Keep It Simple

If you are new to the entire sphere and currently feeling Confused.Com, you aren't alone. Everyone had to undergo the same learning curve at some point. Long term evolution of the technology should see things get more intuitive. However to be on the bleeding edge, this is the price of entry!

Efforts = Rewards

Rather than attempting to read it all in long posts and howtos, the fastest way to learn and explore everything available under the HIVE blockchain eco-system is to start using it. So, in the below we're going to start by going through the motions of using the exchanges, tokens, and wallet for virtual first-timers.

Why Play These Games?

Very simply, they double as their own staking engines with payouts. You both purchase items in order to play, yet then put everything you have staked in the game to work and it can produce rewards.

Payouts, regular, and stretching back like this a long way. Magical Internet Money? Evidently, the game is actively still producing rewards.

Where to Begin? Lesson 1 - Hive Engine

So, we all want a piece of that, what, another way to earn passive income by putting our tokens in a blockchain piggy bank to play games, and get paid for our attention an efforts? That's how the Internet should work, right!

Welcome to Web3 :)

We began by logging into the dCity platform and found ourselves bewildered by options, and trying to figure out how to interact with the thing. First at the top we notice the wallet and tokens, and something called a 'SIM' token.

So, like with many of the dapps we need to get the custom tokens (which are tied back to the blockchain) to participate. This is where decentralized exchanges come in (DEX). So before going further, and having potentially wasted 4 HIVE buying the first card, it's immediately time to see about obtaining the in-game token 'SIM'.

Hive-Engine is the first stop, for all things HIVE custom tokens. It's actually a side-chain, and nothing to repeat here which isn't already contained within their excellent FAQ. Essential reading, and a really good brief to get your head around what's going on.

Hit The DEX

Ok, if you read all of that FAQ, you probably don't need me anymore lol .... well, let's keep going and full circle for those still wanting to know more. Still over at Hive-Engine, logged on with your Hive-Keychain extension, select 'Market' from the to menu.

Hive Engine DEX

The first hurdle above is we find our HIVE balance is zero. Due to this being a sidechain, all explained in the FAQ - we need to load our wallet on Hive Engine. Simply go to the wallet option and select 'DEPOSIT'. Here you can instantly deposit HIVE or HBD from your HIVE account, or a number of other popular cryptocurrencies much like any crypto exchange.

image.png
Having made a small deposit in HIVE, it is now shown as 'SWAP.HIVE' which is a 1-1 peg token used by the sidechain. We can swap it back anytime, and now use it to buy any tokens on the exchange.

Buying Tokens

The example here is SIM for dCity, however this is the same process for any of the tokens and projects you wish to participate in on the HIVE blockchain.

Buying SIM with SWAP.HIVE

Above, highlighted is the asking price, 3rd sell order has enough volume so click this as the maximum we will pay. Next we click our balance and the order will populate. Next, Buy SIM button.

Approve the transaction, and wait, then go to your wallet to see the purchase. Here's are wallet now with our SIM tokens loaded.

Back to the Game!!!

Switching back to the dCity tab, wow, our balance is instantly showing.

Time to shop

Next we go to the in-game 'BUY' option next to our SIM balance.

image.png
We can buy 25 city cards with this balance! That could be a good start, or ...

First we bought 3 cards for 2400 SIM. Then wait for them to be minted. Then went to the market, first selected some luxury homes, then sorted all the cards by lowest price ascending. The strategy here is to load up as many as possible and see what happens!

From there, things got easier. Once our first batch of cards in place, @newtonclassics went on a spree. NewtonClassics city was born!!

Wrapping up

This post has been unintentionally long, but now you should have some idea of the process of diving into dapps on HIVE and beyond.

This has sure been addictive up to now. Below is our new city, however you can also check out all the other games available by browsing https://hivedapps.com/ , next stop looks to be SplinterLands! This game appears to have a great number of active players, and is ranked #1. That's next Sunday morning sorted if it's raining again in Thailand like today!
