Given some of the less attractive things and scenarios I have personally witnessed in and around the Hive community in recent weeks which have really disappointed me, I have been procrastinating on an idea that I think would help put Hive further on the blockchain map, while cleaning up the platform.
Sadly where people go drama tends to follow in one way or another. Whether on the blockchain or out there in the physical world the human condition is susceptible to corruption, ugliness and self destruction, it's something I have never understood. As a specie we have so much potential, just like Hive has. But humans being humans all too easily digress from the wholesome path of self-fulfilment.
Hive reflects the real world. It is a unique place with a unique community but principles matter. They matter just as much on chain as in real life. I have been deeply disappointed with some of the behaviour I have seen in recent weeks from some community members including senior witnesses. I appreciate that money is king and many don't wish to talk about this issue let alone speak out but we do need to address it in one form or another.
I fully understand that people with a large stake don't wish to rock the boat. I appreciate and even accept there is a hierarchy innate in the Hive system and that we all have to work within the parameters of that hierarchy if we want rewards. However, I refuse to accept the premise that freedom of speech doesn't exist on Hive if we want rewards.
I had hoped the blockchain was the solution, or at least a partial solution, to all of the financial repression and corruption in the physical world. I wish that the blockchain was the alternative that gives us light and hope. And in many ways it is. It has helped many people in this world of that there can be no doubt.
But the blockchain is also vulnerable. As with the real world humans can go wrong and get it wrong. Throw money into the mix and boom you have a situation ripe for trouble. But the situation could be improved if we had a little more ethical vision from the top, from witnesses and engagement on this issue from the whole community.
It would be good if people could put aside money for one moment and ask themselves what could Hive be? More importantly what can we achieve as a platform and prove to the world? Try answering it and then put money back into the equation and ask yourselves the same two questions again. We could so easily generate the same level and even increase rewards overall using the same DPoS protocol, but adding a layer of ethical conduct that could even be voted on as part of the Hive constitution could take us to new more profitable heights. An ethics layer could even be integrated into the governance structure.
Yes, it would take a lot of effort, as does most things of this nature, but it would not only be in the interests of Hive it would set a standard and serve as an example to other blockchains in my humble opinion. This goal could be achieved better if we had an Hive Ethics Tsar. If you could take a moment to register your answer in the poll below I would be very grateful.
Further to our personal conversations on Discord I would be very interested to learn what @blocktrades and @guiltyparties have to say about this suggestion.
Peace!
That one is just too dayum easy to rip apart.
The simple answer.
Only if it is my ethics.
Our ethics.
When it comes to our Ethics.
At what point is it right to do wrong?
Most people know right from wrong. It isn't that complicated, but people being people like to make it complicated.
Rephrase.
What ethics would you betray to protect the ethical code?
You are trying to bring old solutions to a new paradigm.
You can appoint/elect/last one standing a new boss, but nobody will listen to them, too many cats in this crowd.
IF you want what you are claiming to want it will require finding someone that the crowd will take the time to listen when they speak.
Nobody has been able to step up into that slot and stay there, yet.
Crim was on track, but she has gone silent.
Aggie did a fair job, but has flamed out for now.
There were some others in 2016/17, but they all burned/flamed out.
The toxicity was even worse back then, if you can believe that.
Firestick fled when he figured out that his easy money was at an end and the crowd was starting to turn on him.
Whatsup had a good chance, but the toxicity got to her.
She is still around, if you'd like to get pointers from her: https://discord.gg/bAZ694EF.
I'm not sure you are aware, but a large percentage of folks in the hive are anarchists.
They will dissent just to be contrary.
They won't follow average leaders.
They point fingers and laugh at those that make the attempt, but find out the hard way that leading the hive is harder than one might expect.
They are prone to drifting off and doing their own things, so even if you could organize something, the chances are not zero that folks just won't show up.
I'm not trying to discourage you, just give you a fair assessment of what you are up against.
Were this magical leader to make themselves known, there is no limit to what could be done, once the crowd expands a little.
Until then, don't get discouraged, we are a tough crowd and we should be, if it were too easy to make it here it wouldn't be cool to be a somebody in the hive.
Thanks @antisocialist for your reply, really appreciate your words. Yes I know it's a tough, probably impossible, task but I just wanted to test the waters and see what people think about such an idea.
Interesting to learn of the characters who have attempted something like this in their own individual way. But it does need the community to coalesce around the idea of an Ethics representative if it has any chance of success.
However, my solution may be 'old' as you put it but ethics and principles are as old as the ages and that will never change. Therefore it still doesn't obviate the requirement for an Ethics Tsar.
I can well imagine plenty of people on a platform like Hive revelling in disruption and anarchy just so they can tell themselves they are 'different' and unique while doing their own thing and ignoring other important factors that if embraced could enrich the entire Hive platform. They need persuasion.
I guess we'll just have to keep looking for that very elusive Ethics person that the community are prepared to listen to and support.
