Hello frenz...
A few months ago, I shared here that soon you’d be able to upload videos directly through the app. Of course, that’s no small feat — and we’re working closely with our friends at @threespeak to make it happen.
That said, yesterday our buddy @eddiespino had a lightbulb moment.

A Common Problem
It’s no secret that internet speed and availability vary wildly across the world. Most Hive users are on mobile, and many of them don’t have a strong or stable connection.
That makes uploading videos a real challenge. A one-minute video recorded on a phone can take hours to upload if all you’ve got is a spotty 3G signal.
The obvious solution? Compression.
Shrinking a video before uploading it makes perfect sense — but most encoders are complicated, sometimes not free, and when they are free, they’re often packed with annoying ads.
We figured it was time to do something about that.
Presenting: My Simple Encoder
Built as a Progressive Web App (PWA), my encoder lets you choose between three different compression levels before you upload your video. Everything happens locally — right on your phone — so you’re not uploading anything until you decide to.
The interface (I hope!) is simple and intuitive, but feedback is always welcome. As with all our projects, this one is open source and already live.
👉 Try it here: https://simpleencoder.vercel.app/
Since it’s a PWA, you can even install it on your phone in seconds for quick, offline access.
Give It a Try!

We’d love to hear what you think. We’re confident this will be super helpful for Hive users with slow connections — and for anyone who just wants to save a bit of storage on their device.
It works with all standard video formats too: MOV, MKV, MP4, AVI.
A Word of Caution
Encoding can use up battery life since it’s a bit of a workout for your phone — but then again, so does spending an hour uploading a big video file.
Think of this as another tool in your creative arsenal. Use it when you need to, and let it make your workflow a little smoother.
This Is a Gift 🎁
We’re not seeking funding for this tool — so no pearl clutching required.
This was built as a gift to the @threespeak community, and to all Hiveans who could use a little helping hand.
Much love,
– Snapie 🐝
@meno - Web-app (wasm) based encoding is poor & time consuming in case if you've tried. We should attempt encoding on-device.
E.g. If you upload a video using telegram chat, it compresses.
On-device-encoding are best - (Android/iOS). Give it a try.
On this point you are correct, wasm is a lot slower. Yesterday I updated the app to use hardware acceleration. It makes it considerably better.
nice work @meno 💪
thanks bud!
Great stuff, hope this helps the new influx of content into the network
Nice! Maybe you can implement it directly into the snapie app for easier use when making a snap / TikTok - just in the background before uploading and show the progress.
that is more or less the plan... but releasing this mini app like this, opens it up for everyone, even if they are not snap users.
I am going to test this, but if it works like I think it will. This is amazing!
A portable version of Handbrake for when you need it out on the go!!!!
that is precisely it...
Great! Thank you @snapie!
This is great! While I interact on Hive mostly on my desktop, we've been cut off from the Internet for two months now after copper wire thieves cut off the copper cables that connect my street to our ISP. So while waiting for it to get fixed we here are on prepaid mobile Internet right now. And since this encoder can also be run on the desktop, I can use it to encode short videos that I can upload easily using our 4G / LTE connection.
I'm sure most of us in the community use Hive from our phones. I've been having issues with the 3speak video upload app for a few weeks now. The funny thing is, it's been discovered that the problem is on my phone; on another phone, the app works fine. 😵💫
That looks cool. I will try it when I get a chance, but I don't do so much video. Could be good for the Skate Hive folk.
I think Hive has been a bit lacking on the video front despite to good work of 3speak. It needs to be as easy as Youtube. I know video is processor and storage intensive, so it's not easy.
The solution will take many steps, but its doable
I'm going to give it a try now. This is cool 😎 👌
Congratulations @snapie! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain And have been rewarded with New badge(s)
Your next payout target is 2000 HP.
The unit is Hive Power equivalent because post and comment rewards can be split into HP and HBD
You can view your badges on your board and compare yourself to others in the Ranking

Generally, the internet does not help with uploading videos and other things. It's a contradiction. Thank you for letting us know.
I believe it will work well sooner than we expect
