Follow Friday: Lock and Key

The News

The deranged antics of Madam President and Ms Musk (it seems pronouns do not matter these days) are not doing much for crypto. They may only think in terms of profit and not care about the freedom aspects. I am sure some people will buy more $HIVE as powering up increases your influence and what you can earn.

There was a bit of a kerfuffle about how InLeo handles keys. They have done some updates, but such issues need to be discussed. InLeo and peakd offer various ways to log in. Some of these may require you to enter your actual key into the site and that does have some risks that they need to minimise. This issue affected their own authentication system. It is better to use Hive Keychain if you can, but that requires some user education. Security is hard and we need to be able to trust the apps we use.

If you suspect that your keys may have been compromised then you should change them. Remember to keep a secure backup.

There was also a DDOS attack on InLeo. This is likely to become more common and sites may need to pay for services to protect themselves. I saw this week that attackers used a massive botnet of compromised online cameras to attack sites to hold them to ransom.

Friday Follows

  • @risingstargame had some updates. The rankings table now depends much more on how many unique cards you have so I went up a lot. The new Pawn Shop encourages you to offload duplicate cards to get more uniques.
  • @ravenmus1c is raising money to help an animal shelter. Your votes can help or you can buy some NFTs.
  • @tdctunes has a new album that is part of a multi-media collaboration involving some Hivers. He is one of several musicians I have seen featuring a link to their Hive profile on their own site. This is a good way to bring more people to Hive so they can see the possibilities.
  • @diggndeeper.com has created a Wordpress plugin that integrates with Hive.
  • @hivedatacenter are offering free hosting for small Hive projects.

The Dog House

This is not really a Hive thing, but a lot of us started off on the old 'S' chain. That has seen very little development since the fork, but they just did an update that blocks some specific accounts from voting. That goes against the principles of blockchain as it could be applied to anyone they fall out with. Years ago they blacklisted various accounts, including mine, so that they show no posts or comments. I had already done an update so that all my old posts directed people to Hive that has the complete archive.

The 'legacy crapchain' (that shall not be named) is centralised and not to be trusted. Hive has its issues, but is operating as it should. I believe that some accounts have been 'censored' due to legal takedown orders for sharing copyright material, but I have not checked on that recently. The posts should still be on the blockchain and anyone could set up a site that unblocks them if they want. The Hive code is all open source. You could ignore downvotes if you wanted to make posts visible regardless. I am not aware that anyone has done this yet.

I should not have to educate Hivers on which is the better chain, but some people may have friends that still use the old one.

The End

How are you feeling about the state of Hive right now? Do you worry about the price or do you think that we can plough on through the bad times and come out stronger? I find this platform more social and enjoyable than others I have used, so I will stick around regardless.

Hi @steevc ☺️ your follow friday is the most interesting news channel I follow, if we can call this like that ahah
A great weekly community service

Cheers. I'm flattered, but I'll keep doing it as it's fun.

I honestly haven't even looked at the price of that old-chain-not-to-be-mentioned in years, much less logged in. I'm just thankful that Justin Sun wasn't among the handful of Bitcoin/crypto whales that the White House reached out to. I'd prefer governments stay out of the Bitcoin/crypto reserve business in general, but seeing as they already are doing it just imagine the ways that advice from Justin Sun could screw it up or lead it astray...

He's as dodgy as they are.

I didn't know about the DDoS attacks on Inleo. Maybe it's a white/gray hacker testing the vulnerabilities...

I've seen the shameful tiny updates on the legacy chain. Well... I had no expectations in their case, so they had nothing to fail.

Thanks for the news! Quite a few interesting stuff this week.

Hive is never dull. I'll catch up on your news soon.

Good stuff - the old chainj indeed has some good guys but they seem to stay there.

I think we are ok -not that worried about prize even i planned different. We have a good ecosystem of DApps - sure we will always suffer from other brands that sound similar but maybe niche is still better than too famous.

You can't plan for what the markets will do, but if we have something good then people could use it.

true, at least I powered up a bit over 1k Hive again today :-)

That's great. Enjoy the benefits :)

!BEER

I have a target - however on Binance Earn i would benefit more from Hive but.......

Excelente información ..sobre leo y la cadena de bloques hive

The free hosting is a remarkable thing to me :)

I already rent a server, but I'm sure others could make good use of this.

It's good to see platforms like InLeo addressing key management, but user education is key to minimizing risks.

@steevc, I paid out 6.957 HIVE and 0.000 HBD to reward 8 comments in this discussion thread.
