Hello again Hivers! mrdadiromz once again and I would like to share with you now What is a Deck Ratings? How is life in that position and How is Life being at sea.
So, sit back, relax while enjoying your drinks, maybe? Coffee, Tea, or some alcoholic drinks? Sounds great isn't it?😊
Anyways, I am having a cup of coffee while making this blog because we are not allowed to have an alcoholic drinks onboard.
Most of the company nowadays are implenting a ZERO ALCOHOL ONBOARD! So, it is a kind of thirsty in that part.🍻🥂 😉 I think that's enough for alcoholic stuff coz it makes me more thirsty!
And let's go to my First, Second or Third blog? Considered it the First!
WHO IS RATINGS?
(Lower to Higher Rank)
This is only about the Cargo ships.
Deck Department
That consist of a Cadet, Ordinary Seaman(O/S), Able-Bodied Seaman(A/B) and the Bosun.
Engine Department
That include Engine Cadet, Wiper/Motorman, Oiler and Fitter.
Galley Department consist of two positions only, The Cook and the Messman/Steward.
Those Ratings positions can be more specially the Galley/Kitchen and the Deck Department depending on the type of the vessel. For example, for the Galley department if we are going to talk on the Passenger Vessel of course a way way lot more people in that area. Even on the Deck Department they also have an additional like for example Carpenters! Another type of Cargo Ship they also have a Forklift and Excavator Drivers. So, let's go back to where I am boarded type of ship.
Before you can reach the Bosun position, (we are now talking only of not becoming an Officer) you must stepped on the Cadet, OS and AB position first.
The same story, the same process in the Engine Department and the Galley Department. Procedures step by step.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF A RATINGS
ENGINE DEPARTMENT must ensure that all rooms accounted on that department specially Engine room should be cleaned and free of slippery deck, cleaning filters, paintings, ballasting and deballasting and so on.
GALLEY DEPARTMENT is the main source of power people needed while serving on that certain ship. Because they are the one who prepares your food from Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner including the stuff you eated during your coffee or breaktimes(cakes and cookies, fresh breads). And of course the cleaning of the Messrooms/Dinning Rooms, the utensils, Freedges and refrigerators and the Galley itself must be given by them the best Hygien that they can give.
NOW DECK RATINGS
DECK CADET are learners. Means they are onboard to seek more ideas on every single things onboard the ship. From navigating, the cleaning jobs, how to play along the rough movement of the sea specially stormy weathers. They can also play the role of an O/S and some ships they can be a lookouts along with the officers in the bridge(wheel house).
O/S and A/B's
Well, they are almost the same work rotations. From Gangway watch(Security Guards) even they can work together in job cleaning. From inside the accomodations and Deck and Cargo Hold washing. Deck maintenance, greasing on all moving parts(the needed ones). Big ship's which has Cargo cranes greasing the wires like spiderman, sitting on top of the wires. Chipping rusty places and painting. The only difference between the two positions is that in Bigger Ship's the A/B's are doing the lookout at night and they are responsible of holding the steering wheel coming in and out of each port including channeling(a ship passing thru canal or a river) taking more hour to reach the destined ports.
How about the Bosun?
He is the Foreman. Each mornings he goes up to the bridge/wheel house to take job orders from the Chief Officer and or from the Master/Captain desired works for that day. And then he will designate other Ratings on Deck to the job or he will work together with them or just roam arround to seek more job for him or for the other guys. Best part from the Bosun's mouth are; Coffee time guys, Lunch time and Quarter to Five now(talking about afternoon), Today is Saturday only Halfday of working day and Tomorrow Sunday folks.. REST DAY... And we are like, YAHOOOOOOO!!!
I remember what I had experienced before, Saturday is Karaoke like TGIF in land. TGIS! WOOHHH... Barbeque with Beer and Wine(no hard liqour onboard) sometimes or atleast twice a month with roasted suckling pig(lechon) and then you can forget all your hardworks during the entire week.
For now, working on small ship's working coast to coast in European Countries most of the days are Mondays with very seldom of having holidays. Working on a fast pace environment, short stay in ports, short voyages, no more get together moment, makes you more easily exhausted(not all,but mostly).

But, what can do? This is the life we choose! We have to be more stronger enough! Life at Sea is like being in prison. The difference are, we are paid and we can be with our Family in every six or nine months depends on the certain contract or we called it sentence. Plus nowadays, ship's have internet onboard already so the longings for your Family is way better compared before that we can only received news from the Family thru mail. And you know what? This could be months before you can have the answers for those questions you've ask from your letter sent 3 months ago! That Life from the Old Seafarers although way back 2006 when I started my international voyages even that time most of the Seafarers don't have the access to the internet. For me I am already using that time yahoo and friendster, but not all the time because I still need to find Internet Cafe. We are lucky enough if we have some ports likely in America and or Canada or Australia or some other countries that has provided a telephone card with your expence of course then we can call to our loved ones. But only few having a phone before that is one of the problem as well. That is why Seafarer nowadays are lucky enough to have most of the Family a phone and the Internet. Communications grows fast!
Anyways, everything is for the Family that's why pain and the rest of your longings to your family will disappears when you think of them and say, everything I will do is for you! This is for my family. I know there's a lot of hard job out there but for us seafarers this is one of the toughest job on earth that can be showcase.
