Environmental Stewardship, Contrast and Comparison of Traditional First Nations approaches versus Scientific Perspective Homeschooling Blog, Grade 7

Environmental Stewardship

Similarities

Traditional First Nations(TFN) communities and our modern urban communities believe in passing on ‘expert’ knowledge. Both TFN and modern scientists study nature and wish to preserve and rejuvenate it. Everyones health is dependent on the health of nature. Every community must adapt to a changing world.

Differences

The knowledge holders among the TFN are the elders, and this knowledge is passed onto the younger generations through oral story-telling. In our modern traditions, knowledge is held by academics and passed on through writing and formal education. TFN’s are more likely ‘to live off the land. TFN have a legacy knowledge based on a close, subsistent relationship with nature and its cycles and is often understood through metaphor. Scientists often live removed from nature and interpret it through data, patterns, and math.

Urbanized people, through trade and transportation, source their resources from multiple habitats and ecosystems. TFN’s people are more vulnerable to habitat destruction. They must maintain the biodiversity and sustainability of their immediate habitat. Being environment stewards is essentially important to survival.

TFN people are more collective in their living. They cannot depend as much on wages, infrastructure, and grocery stores. They must share with on another to maintain their communities. Often times TFN communities do not have the same resources as urbanized communities do to aid in the adaptation to our rapidly changing world, making it even more important that they have each other to depend on.
