Making Stone Tools

The first archaeological records of stone tools on the African continent date back from 2.5 million years ago. Two rocks were smashed together to make sharp flakes of rock, a cutting tool.

Evidence of increased brain size in our human ancestors dates back 2 million years ago.

1.5 million years ago, more innovative stone tools like hand axes appeared in the archaeological record.

Between 100-200,000 years ago, out ancestors developed new technologies like hafting, which combined stone tools with wooden handles.

About 80 000 years ago, they started making bone tools.

Without these technologies, we wouldn’t have had access to high quality food needed for brain development.

We need larger brains to live in larger groups and deal with each other socially. Over time, we become more experimental and invent better technologies and tools.
