School of Athens

The School of Athens is a famous Renaissance painting by Raphael. This was done almost 2 000 years after the death of Alexander the Great. It represents one historical era’s idea of what another historical era may have been like, the Golden Age of Athens. Renaissance means rebirth. It was rebirth of classical Greece and Rome’s culture and ideas.

Many of the motifs, symbols and architecture are more representative of Renaissance Italy and Ancient Rome. We see Roman arches. The painting depicts the great philosophers, scientist, and mathematicians of Classical Greece, with Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates in the center. Renaissance masters like Da Vinci and even Raphael himself are also pictured. Da Vinci is the model for Plato.

The School of Athens follows in the tradition of a famous men fresco. We see these men engaged in debate, teaching, and study.

We see realistic statues of idealized human forms, known as Renaissance humanism. Both the Renaissance and Classical Greece promote an idea the humans can pursue an ideal, heroic mind and body.
