What The First Week of Milk Looks Like On The Homestead

Week 1 of cheese.png

This past year was painfully lacking in dairy. We had tried artificially inseminating our Jersey cow with Mini Jersey semen that we brought up from the States. However, Jerseys are notoriously hard to AI and she did not catch on any of the attempts. Eventually our bull calf was old enough to breed our cow, however, a year had passed since Rosie had calved, and her milk supply was falling due to how long it had been since she had freshened (come into milk again) and due to inconsistent milking (the start of the market gardening season was full challenging at best this past year. So, I dried Rosie off….knowing it meant no milk…no cheese…no cream…no butter…none of it.

With Rosie coming into milk again, we have been collecting milk for 4 days, and I’ve been busy at work making cheese, butter, and a whole bunch of other goodies. Here is a bit of a glimpse into what 4 days of milk looks like on the homestead.

Wow! You have been busy! This is so exciting, I hope you do a post on how you make some of that delicious cheese some day. Cheese making is some thing I have not dabbled in, but have a real desire to do. Thank you so much for sharing this!

I absolutely will be! I am making cheese every second day right now. I'll be sharing my process very soon!
