Vermicompost is a boon for plant growth and the environment. The best part is that one can use kitchen waste to create organic compost replete with minerals and microbes that plants love. Rich in natural phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, they cause no damage to the surroundings.
The worm for the purpose is the red wiggler. In Asia, they prefer blue worms. The creatures live on waste and are way better than the ones who eat soil. Ironically, most people cannot identify them and prefer to buy from the garden or pet stores.
Requirements:
To create your vermicompost at home, you need a bin, a small lamp, some pesticide-free soil, and about a thousand worms ( weighing nearly half a pound). Also, you need to feed the worms with kitchen waste. And they eat half their weight each day!
Leftovers like bread, grains, fruits, vegetables, egg shells are great. Please avoid
coffee, lemon, and animal products.
Five-step procedure:
Drill a few holes all over the bin and on the top to let air pass.
Place a lamp or light on the top of the bin to keep it warm, and avoid direct sunlight.
Add the waste products and worms, and shift the apparatus to a cool, dark place.
Spray water to retain mild moisture.
Feed the worms with your rubbish daily.
There's no smell, and it's safe to keep indoors! Good luck with Vermicomposting!!
It's actually a little more complicated than you explain. Do you use the lamp for heat or light? I ask because Worms hate light. They also need different layers of bedding that is moist. They also don't mind coffee but you do need to avoid vegetables like onions and anything to acid or citrus
Thanks for the feedback! I tried to make it as simple as possible for beginners and then assist as they get started.
I mentioned, 'avoid direct sunlight' and 'dark place,' so yes the light was for warmth: now tweaked a bit. Don't want to confuse readers with bedding, etc. and will try to take care in future posts. I'm not sure about coffee as there are different types of worms world over. Avoiding could be safer.
Thanks again and we are all learning here on Steemit. Steem on!
No problem. I just didn't want people killing their brought worms and getting deflated if it didn't work the first time. Vermicompost is a great system to try. Well done on trying to encourage more people to try it :)
Great! Thank you very much for your understanding. :)
Upvote... Great post and I have this very same set up you described.
Super awesome! Thanks for your comment. :)
wow you really are awesome... Resteemed and following!! thank you again
Thank you! ;)
It is a very useful and practical information.
but, are you sure that the worms did not seek to escape from the maintainer?
If you keep the conditions just right they won't try to excape. Don't over feed, keep moisture not soaking wet, and keep in dark place. They will be happy and have no need to seek a new home.
Cheers.
Thanks.
You must keep the lid closed and drill small holes so the worms breathe.
They should be happy eating and excreted inside. ;)
I am glad to read. Our country is the agricultural lands. That requires a worm breeding..
That's great. :)
Organic is always the best!

Worms are a major benefit to any kind of growing.
Yes, most of them. ;)
@superstar2018, I love how you simplify your content for all permanewbies! Could you please make some science-filled articles for all of us permageeks out there?
Perfect conditions, perfect lamp, perfect size of container, airflow, mix of ingredients and so on! I will be researching vermicompost too, so you'll see the results of my investigation... Thank you for keeping an eye on my blog! Salute, @freegardens
Thank you very much for your feedback. That's all I can offer at the moment given that I have a few hundred followers now and need to take into account the cost, benefit, time constraints as well as the psychology of the audience.
However, you have a relevant point and I will keep in mind when I have more following.
Cheers!

THANK YOU SO MUCH. This is so helpful. I've been wanting to compost for a while now.
You're most welcome!
It's cheap, easy, and the very best for your garden. :)
I don't think I could keep in my house because it would bother my family, but maybe on the porch would be ok.
Yes, that makes perfect sense!
Cheers.
Nice natural fertilizer.
Way better than chemicals. :)
Will try to create vermicompost at home with your five easy steps but can I put it close?
Did not get you: 'can I put it close'?
Please let me know if you face any problem.

Wonderful way to have an organic garden! When I still had my own home, I used egg shells, banana peels, and used coffee ground for my garden..
That's great! Hope you do it again.
It's a great pleasure and gives a lot of contentment.
Many years ago, when I had a big garden I had a busy factory of worms. I loved it. I could even shove in small amounts of newspaper from time to time. For me it was all about reducing waste. Seeing the kitchen waste build up certainly helped me keep an eye on wastage!
That's great! Do you intend to have it again?
Maybe one day. Living in Vietnam ants are a huge problem. When I get a good garden space again I will get one. But at the moment I only have a small apartment with no garden space. Next year hopefully!
Good luck for next year!
Nice post...
Thank you :)
Do you try this?
Yes, but I have tried to make it simple for the readers so they start at least, and refine later.
