Hope When It’s Easier to Be Hopeless

Financial collapse, failures in effective governance, social unrest...

I’ve been hopeful the blockchain and cryptocurrency world could demonstrate effective, voluntary, decentralized solutions.

  • Money uncorrupted by central banking cartels and violent governments...seems instead we have thousands of 24/7 token casino “projects” pumping and dumping continuously with no regard for fundamentals.

  • Decentralized Autonomous Communities with transparent governance, fully auditable and consistent workflows, and dynamic, non-hierarchical, engaged participation. Instead we have high gas fees on ETH, multi-signature transaction failures on EOS, wallet and usability confusion (including a $2.6m mistake), and the ever present “human nature” and it’s desire to be managed, directed, and even ruled because personal responsibility is just too damned hard.

  • Private non-monopolistic protection companies serving their communities with transparent, on-chain reputation scores, smart contract accountability bonds, and community-controlled, multi-signature token rewards for deescalation. Instead we’ve got... nothing. Attempts at blockchain reputation and identity solutions start to look like Communist China’s social control regime with KYC, AML, FACTA, FBAR, and the like. Sybil attacks everywhere.

It sometimes feels like not much is practically being accomplished in this space to improve people’s lives. It feels like trying to walk up a steep frozen driveway slick with baby oil.

This stuff is hard, yo.

We can either give up, roll over, and accept our next overlords, or we can continue to strive for something better. Maybe the next solution around the corner will get us one step closer which will lead to another step and then another. Ethereum 2.0, Casper Labs, Cardano, EOS IBC, Block One’s Voice, Sense Chat, Polka Dot... maybe something yet released will create the new opportunities we need to build something great.

Freedom is worth working towards and even if not everyone wants to be free, those that do will someday have tools to create a world we want to live in and maybe, just maybe, they’ll enjoy it too. It’s easy to get discouraged when it seems the world is ready for new solutions, but the solutions aren’t ready for it. Discussions are happening concerning defunding the police, the rigged stock market among mass unemployment, and the completely corrupt political systems which keep pedophiles and war mongers unaccountable while their enforcers kill on camera.

People are waking up. They are pissed. They know they are being played. They know something has to change and something has to come about that is better than this. It might be Sea Steading powered by local cryptocurrencies and voluntaryism. It might be people tearing up their lawns to grow food and provide for their neighbors. It might be any number of things... but most of all it’s hope.

I hope this post finds you hopeful when it’s much easier to be hopeless.

Thank you, for this uplifting post, Luke.

Here’s a poem of mine on the subject:

Hope

Hope’s not quite as it seems -
it’s slimmer than you’d think
and less steady on its feet

Sometimes, it’s out of breath
can hardly see ahead
and cries itself to sleep

It may not tell you all this
or the times it cheated death
but, if you knew it, you’d know

how Hope can keep a secret...

Wow! Real talk.

It's always darkest before the dawn.
I'm surprisingly optimistic.

Truth is, most of these system like the stock market favour so many oligarchs in high places and irrespective of how much we seek to change this, the world needs to totally agree in unison to embrace change if not we'll be taking one step forward and two steps backward
