My Best Ideas Usually Come While I’m Avoiding Something

It's funny, isn't it? I’ve realized I've never, ever had a truly life-changing thought while I'm sitting there, staring intently at my perfectly organized to-do list, trying to will brilliance into existence. That just doesn't seem to be where the magic happens for me. But while I’m mindlessly doing the dishes, letting my hands work on autopilot? Or just staring up at the ceiling, letting my gaze unfocus? Or even better, when I'm out walking aimlessly, not really going anywhere in particular? That’s when it consistently happens. That’s when the little sparks ignite and unexpected connections form in my mind.

Avoidance often gets such a bad rap, doesn't it? We're taught it's lazy, unproductive, something to be overcome. But honestly? Sometimes, what looks like avoidance from the outside is actually just creating space. It’s stepping away from the direct pressure, the immediate task, and allowing my mind to wander, to breathe, to connect disparate thoughts without the intense focus. And in that very space, in that freedom from direct demands, that’s precisely where ideas truly bloom. It's where the subconscious gets to work its quiet wonders.

Lately, I’ve started calling this phenomenon "creative delay." It just feels more generous, doesn't it? It reframes what might seem like procrastination into a vital part of the creative process, giving myself permission to let ideas simmer and develop on their own timeline.
