How to shave with a STRAIGHT razor in 6 steps(with pictures). Your grandfather knew better and here is why!

Dear SteemIT, we all know the modern shaving tools save time and effort. Today very little men shave like their ancestors used to - with a straight razor.

Why do you need to do something the hard way?

There are many sensible reasons, most of which revolve around the fact that shaving with a straight razor simply achieves a better result if you are skilled enough and lets face it, there`s something really alpha and manly about it. Here are the 6 rules you should follow:

1. The razor should be really sharp

Check for deffects on the blade, the new-age laser sharpened blades do not need extra sharpening.

2. Use a wet towel

You should cover your face with a warm wet towel first. This is a good idea because the heat makes your beard way softer and easier to remove.

3. Foam and shaving

Cover carefully your face with foam and start shaving. Do each zone only ONCE in the direction of the hair.

4. Safety first

These types of blades can be extremely dangerous if not operated properly, look at the picture below for the correct angle.

Do not press hard, the blade is sharp enough to do the job.

5. Assist yourself with the other hand.

In order for you to achieve the perfect shave use the fingers of your left hand to pull the skin you are shaving. Pulled skin is operated on easier.

6. Do not rush it

If it is your first time it would definately be a challenging task. Start slow and steady, it is better to try it for the first time on the weekend, not before your job. Play some music and enjoy a traditional and manly ritual.

Do not forget aftershave and a great coffee!

Nice! I just got a straight razor shave last week in preparation for my son's wedding. Do you have a recommendation for purchasing a quality straight razor?

Hey, thanks for reading my article. I use a German one made by Wacker Rasiermesser but I am sure there are many more decent ones, I suggest trying something cheaper first to see how you like it!

German engineering. I like that! Thanks for the heads up.
