As a starter Linux I recommend Lubuntu - the light version of Ubuntu. Lightening fast and ideal for Steemit with just the basics only - no bloat! It's super easy to install too :)
I've used Red Hat, Mandrake, Knoppix, Ubuntu and Raspbian. The latest ones are pretty easy to use for anyone really. I'd like to understand more about the OS, but I am studying some other computing stuff these days, e.g. programming and algorithms. It's all interesting, but nobody can know it all
Mint Linux and Puppy Linux are also my favourites. Puppy Linux is the fastest live distro I've ever seen, but my favourite remains Lubuntu - it's always the one that I keep coming back too.
