The Flow of Science and Humanity

Science helps us understand how the universe works, and is useful in many ways - it can assess whether or not something is healthy for you, what caused an accident to happen, and even if someone committed a crime. Science also produces technology that allows us to combat natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods. Science has also led to the invention of things such as the internet (which makes communication between humans much easier). However science may have some negative aspects too - there are now lots of chemicals in our food which definitely aren't good for us. Scientists often come up with new ideas but these may be wrong so they should be tested carefully before being applied widely.

Let us consider that science does not have all the answers. One might ask why it has any at all; Why is it even possible to discover scientific truth? Humanity could easily place these phenomena under divine or mystical workings but the curiosity to understand and build drives science. We might say that science is possible and therefore uncovers the truth of this world. It must be admitted, however, that scientific 'truth' changes over time. For example, consider Newtonian physics; most of this has been replaced by Einstein's theory of relativity. What about the germ theory of disease? This has been modified to a greater or lesser extent by discoveries in biology.

Thinking even further back, the most successful scientific theory of all, evolution. This is accepted by almost everyone as a true and accurate description of how humans came to be on our planet, yet it has many detractors. Faith and other perspectives think differently to this theory. It’s interesting to think about why many refute science. But I also understand that there is also a tying of faith and sciences.

But at the core of science, no one likes to be told they are wrong. It is not easy for a human to accept that his or her work are in error. The conclusion I have reached is that science is useful and beneficial in many ways, but it can yield many drawbacks that need to be considered carefully as it can quickly be manipulated into tools of detrimental effect.
