BBC is reporting that some prisons in the path of Hurricane Florence will not be evacuated with the South Carolina Department of Corrections claiming that "In the past, it's been safer to leave them there,". Some prisons in Virginia and North Carolina have been evacuated.

In Houston last year during Hurricane Harvey, severely flood prisons had inmates struggling with minimal drinking water and food and poor access to medicine, as well as stifling heat.

During Katrina, 517 prisons in Orleans Parish Prison went missing. Inmates were unsupervised and were living in chest high water for days with no food or fresh water.

And once again, the marginalised people in North America will suffer the most during what is predicted to be one of the most damaging hurricanes this season.
