An INDEPENDENCE DAY Message to ALL AMERICANS

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Sedition you might say? Well, if you consider this portion of the Declaration of Independence to be considered treasonous, then yes. Fifty-six representatives of the original 13 Colonies (Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire) signed this declaration almost 244 years ago (August 2, 1776). You might want to take a little time and read the entire document. It is only 1458 words, about a 10-minute read, and gives context to the meaning of Independence Day in these United States.

Yet; are we united ? I believe we can all agree that our Nation is in troubling times. I can not think of a time in my short life-time when I have seen such division among my Countrymen along political, cultural, ideological, and religious lines. Riots in the streets, unstatesmanlike behavior among our elected leadership, rampant and open bigotry and misogeny... It is all very sad and why?

Why are we acting this way? Is it a conspriacy of the elite to consolidate power? I am not sure. Guess it depends on where we find our truths and what we choose to believe. Not an easy task in today's world.

Each and every one of us has our prejudices. I doubt that anyone can truthfully say they do not. Black Lives Matter (BLM), Anti-fascist (ANTIFA), the Stars and Bars, COVID-19 (Corona). These topics will definitely cause a reaction from the majority of people one way or another. How do we address and deal with these prejudices? Education! Most prejudice is caused by two things: ignorance, and fear. It is only by educating ourselves that we can overcome the problems we face in our Nation today.

As we Americans celebrate this day which marks our Independence, let us learn more about our Nation's history. Read about Crispus Attucks, Salem Poor, Phyllis Wheatley, Sergeant William Harvey Carney, and so many more folks that should be honored in the GARDEN OF HEROS preposed by President Trump.

I appreciate the list of historical figured to research. I constantly say that we as Americans have forgot out history. Yet here I am reading your suggested list of forgotten historical figured, and I realize that none of them are familiar to me. Great post. I appreciate the guide post into revisiting forgotten, and maybe even buried history. Thank you.

True words, education is the only way out of this mess. If we can ever stop funding school systems with local property taxes, we could at least have an even playing for rich and poor communities to have the same quality of public school education.
