Liberalism is Capitalism on steroids. It only serves the interests of the elites, in particular the economic elites.
This class has the means of material production at its disposal, has control at the same time over the means of mental production and the ruling ideas are nothing more than the ideal expression of the dominant material relationships, the relationships which make one class the ruling one.
This type of self serving politics is the basis of neo-liberalism. And functions as a breeding ground for tyranny, such as fascism.
Karl Marx had a lot of crazy ideas but he was right about one thing, capitalism is not a sustainable system.
In 1933 (just before WWII) Wilhelm Reich wrote a book "The Mass Psychology of Fascism". In this book he describes how liberalism serves as the breeding ground of facsism. But whatever tyranny you have in mind, liberalism can feed it quiet well.
