Embedded RFIDs in processor and memory chips do not have to have readable data in order provide a "service". These things are extremely small and although they are often incorporated into the chip layout they can also be set into the plastic casing of items such as USB keys, SD cards or just about anything else. Anyone wanting to locate a piece of equipment tagged in this way just needs to sweep for an RFID return. If it has not been screened it can be found.
