On August 6, 1991 Tim Berners Lee created the first website ever at CERN under the URL: http://info.cern.ch
He wrote on this website about his WWW project:
"The project is based on the philosophy that much academic information should be freely available to anyone. It aims to allow information sharing within internationally dispersed teams, and the dissemination of information by support groups. Originally aimed at the High Energy Physics community, it has spread to other areas and attracted much interest in user support, resource discovery and collaborative work areas."
The original first website on the URL http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html was running on a NeXT Workstation at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Berners-Lee outlined on this page how websites could be created an how to use them.

Big fan. I was on the Internet before the World Wide Web. At the advent, it was unfathomable what it would become; we all knew it was special to a degree that we could not anticipate the breadth and depth of the revolution Sir TBL created.
