In the next two days the internet's freedom could be lost. Or at best bureaucratized.

In case you missed it. iCANN, the internet's map and directory which connects domain names to IP addresses is 2 days away from being transferred from US jurisdiction to the UN.

On first glance this is alarming. And a deeper look reinforces that.

I've begun talking about this on my facebook wall, but there's too much silence.

Does no body care about this?

Really??

How different would our lives be without an internet where we are free to connect?

I get the argument that this is fear mongering. And while there's potential upside, there's also plenty to lose.

I also get the argument that the US is 'the worst country in the world'

But when it comes to free speech, as much as some would like to believe that, it's simply not true.

In many parts of the world, many of us 'privileged ones' would have faced severe punishment for our beliefs and their expression.

Many do today.

In this case, in the case of the internet, I do have to recognize the protection of the American constitution over free speech, as beneficial to most good people. iCANN being american invented and hosted, being under its jurisdiction.

I think the case is strong that this protection over the internet's core map and directory has been mostly beneficial, is clear.

So yeah. I think its worth pushing and pressuring the American congress to not allow this. It will be decided in the next two days. Links on how to act, from anywhere in the world, bellow.

If it fails, the internet could become beutocracy as complex and censorship ridden as modern banking.

the blockchain technology will be the only reasonable hope I see to maintain or rebuilding a free -as in free speech- internet.

Either way, it is gonna get shaky.

Does IPFS circumvent ICANN?

Idk that IPFS uses the domain system. if it does, then it does not.

If it does not, then it still has the problem of mapping domains to IP addresses.

Blockstack.io and Emercoin.com are two active blockchain tech projects working on solving the mapping issue with blockchain tech.

Re-steemed for more visibility!

Agreed! Re-steemed!

Free speech internet is a thing of the past. Remember websites in 1995? I do as I had one. Now you can't say anything on the internet without serious repercussions unless it's the popular, approved message. May as well be in North Korea hooking up to the myriad state-sponsored websites.

Nice article. Same mindset here. The biggest group of uneducated investors in mankind has to define the trustworthyness and price of a crypto. It's an interesting world we live in.
