The ‘deep web’ is different from the ‘dark web,’ while people assume the two are the same they are not. There are both good and bad when it comes to them and people often don’t even realize they exist.
These are parts of the internet that are not indexed and while people assume they are nothing but places for people to hire assassins, learn how to kill themselves properly, or traffic humans many activists use it as a means of free speech and privacy in the countries they live. The internet is like an ocean, we can only see so much of it. It is thought that the actual internet in itself is mostly made up of the places we cannot access.
The deep web is also known as the ‘invisible web,’ the ‘undernet,’ the ‘hidden web,’ or the ‘deepnet.’ It is made up of parts of the internet that we do not consider the ‘surface web.’ The ‘surface web’ being the parts of the web that are indexed by conventional search engines like Google or Bing. Most of these sites are not indexed because they use databases that are lacking hyperlinks and can only be found by using an internal search query. It is stuff that has been made private or things you cannot access without special links. The name ‘deep web’ is said to have been coiled by computer scientist Mike Bergman in his paper titled “The Deep Web: Surfacing Hidden Value” that was published in The Journal of Electronic Publishing back in 2001.
Now when it comes to the dark web it is simply a small subsection of the deep web. The dark web can be accessed by TOR or an onion browser. This is different from the deep web because we often use the deep web without realizing it as it can be accessed without an onion. Because of the anonymity offered by TOR, the dark web itself has gained a bad name.
People purchasing things on the dark web use something known as Bitcoin. Lots of these people are using the dark web for all of the terrible things mentioned earlier on in this article and more. That being said, law enforcement uses the dark web as a means of tracking and prosecuting pedophile ring. The FBI was able to arrest over one thousand people internationally linked to a dark net child abuse site known as Playpen after spreading malware to their computers under one warrant. There once was even an illegal marketplace on the dark web known as the Silk Road while it was only in operation for two short years it is believed to have processed around $1.2bn.
