Hello to the Ecency Community. I just found out about this place today. I have no idea how this thing works, but I'm excited to figure it out.
Can any of you give me some tips or info on how this whole thing works? I see dollar amounts listed under some people's posts, is that how much money they have earned from that one post? Is that actual money? Sorry is this is a really silly question, but I am intrigued by a truly de-centralized social media platform.

There's a lot to figure out! 😅 Ecency is one of the many apps that run on the Hive blockchain. Your Ecency account is actually a Hive account that can be used to log in to all sorts of things - many blogging interfaces as well as several games!
The dollar amounts under people's posts are what people have earnt on that post. Basically, if someone upvotes a post or comment it's rewarded based on how much Hive Power that someone has -- I've voted on your post and my vote is worth 36 cents. After 7 days, the post will payout 50/50 to the author and to the people who voted on it. So say a post has $10 on it. $5 will go to the author of the post, and the other $5 gets split amongst the people who voted for it. 🙂
It's in crypto. The $HIVE cryptocurrency, which can be converted to actual money. You can also keep it in your account, power it up, and accumulate a bunch of power with which to vote on other peoples posts with!

To answer your second question (the first should be covered by the last bit of my reply), the dollar amount under each post is what the author and curators (meaning the people who upvoted the post) will split 50/50 when it pays out 7 days after it was published. Currently one HIVE = $0.55 USD, so definitely actual money.

The amounts are the current dollar value of the earnings. Half of the earnings go to the author and the other half to all the voters/curators. How much it depends on how strong they voted.
