Este proceso de reparación se basa en el funcionamiento de un polímero con memoria de formas, que ya existe y que fue desarrollado por la Universidad de Rochester en Estados Unidos.
El planteamiento de los ingenieros de Motorola es aplicar este material en la construcción de protectores para proteger los paneles LCD o LED que llevan instalados los smartphones y las tablets en el mercado.
Con la aplicación de calor, el polímero desarrollado por la Universidad de Rochester es capaz de recuperar su forma original mediante la aplicación de ciclos térmicos. Es decir, aplicando cambios de temperatura repentinos y muy rápidos sobre él.
Sin embargo, por el momento, son solos planes sobre papel registrados en la Oficina de Patentes de Estados Unidos, aunque el material autorreparador está disponible para todas las compañías por lo que en breve podría llegar al mercado.
