They either bought or mined extra. Currently these are only ways to get additional steem. You can also earn steem by posting and commenting or voting, but these will not be added to your account until after the first payout day, July 4th.

"wang" appears to be a bot that someone set up to up vote and give pre-recorded welcomes to new posters. Whoever is running the bot seems to have gotten Steem Power from many accounts and will later probably divide up the earnings on July 4th.
