Yes, there was some shenanigans you could say 5 or 6 years ago or so on Hive when Steemit Inc ("stinc") was sold to Justin Sun (I talked to him for 5 mins over voice in DIscord then! I think together with @drakos in there as well) and then the original steem (now Hive) witnesses were booted from their accounts and so there was a fork and basically 99% of people just continued on Hive and not Steem.
Anyway, you can use both of course, all up to you, but specifically for your interest in servers, networking, programming etc I think you're better off at Hive.
(I hope, I also only recently re-began posting here my tech stuff).
Anyway, middle of the night again for me, I am off and on doing some server management in an Amsterdam datacenter for a customer so I need to go there in the middle of the night when online traffic is low for the customer).
