Travelling around Austria, the world - and life.

in #introduceyourself7 years ago (edited)

Hello fellow Steemians,

since @dovetail has finally managed to drag me here, I thought I'd best introduce myself. My name is Theodora and I live where the hills are said to be alive with the sound of music, where Freud analysed people on his couch, and where Arnold Schwarzenegger was born: Austria.

In this blog post, I'd like to tell you a bit about myself and what I've got planned for you.

Me and my little friend Mercutio - I think he's cuter than a piece of paper.

Where I come from

I grew up in a small Austrian town where I learned to read and write at the age of three. I learned English, Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and Russian as well as some Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, Hungarian, Norwegian, and a couple of other more or less obscure languages. Currently, I'm trying to learn Dari (Afghan Persian). My second home is a city in Ukraine.

Things I've done so far - a non-exhaustive list

In my life, I've tried a fair share of things - and I hope the best are yet to come:

  • I've worked in the automotive industry.
  • I studied bio-engineering, biology - with a focus on animals and their behaviour and cognition, linguistics, cultural studies, and even mass-media communication.
  • I learned how to train parrots, cows, and goldfish (yes, you can train goldfish and no, they don't have crap memory!).
  • I used to play in a jazz band.
  • I worked in biotech for about seven years, but quit my "safe" job on my way home from a trip to Eastern Europe in July 2017
  • I taught English in nursery schools.
  • I travelled a lot - particularly when I was a teenager.
  • I'm the editor of an online-magazine for biologists.
  • I do PR.
  • I blog.
  • But most of all: I live and I'm doing more of what makes me happy.

Five random things I love:

  1. Photography
  2. Writing
  3. Books
  4. Geocaching
  5. Cooking

Why I'm here

Travelling around the globe, I noticed that people usually either don't know Austria at all or they see it as the place where Mozart / Klimt / Schwarzenegger were born. Which it undoubtedly is. Well, in fact, Austria isn't really Mozart's home country - because strictly speaking, Mozart wasn't Austrian (if you want to find out why and why I think it would have been amazing to drink a few pints of beer with him, follow me and keep reading my blog Travelling around Austria with a Local, as I've already put this onto my long list of topics I'm going to write about). Anyway, Austria is so much more than Mozart, Klimt, Schwarzenegger, mountains, yodelling, leather trousers - or kangaroos. (Note to self: I have to write a post about "no kangaroos in Austria"-T-shirts because... seriously, dear rest of the world, this is not Australia!)

Showing foreigners around Austria also opened up a whole new world to me. All those weird things about Austrian / Alpine traditions, the crazy tourist attractions we have, the weirdness of Standard German - and the Austrian dialects (one of which is my mother tongue) - I never gave them much thought until I saw Austria through the eyes of my friends from all over the world.

Travelling around Austria with me and my blog

If you keep reading my blog, this is what you will get:

Austria from this Austrian's perspective (not Fake Mozart's, but mine ;-)),

pics of its landscapes,

and of hidden gems.

Places you might not find in a guidebook,

an insight into weird Austrian traditions

and into the Austrian sense of humour.

Food for thought,

hopefully a few laughs or at least giggles -

and, believe it or not, some cat content...

...dog content...

...and even the occasional guinea pig content.

Of course I'm also curious to find out more about you, receive feedback and answer your questions!

I might also throw in the occasional recipe for Austrian food or share some of my pictures with you.

I'm really looking forward to going on this adventure with each and everyone of you!

~ Theodora ~

Greets, @theaustrianguy

Herzlich willkommen Theodora,

Welcome to steemit @theodora.austria ! Nice Photography ! I hope you enjoy here ! I will give the vote to you, please follow me

Dear @Theodora, welcome to Steemit World! So nice to have you here! Of course I was curious and went to your quite German blog which is also worth reading. Good luck here and in the rest of the world ;) !

Thank you very much @martinamartini! Still working on the German blog - so make sure to come back soon for an update on Christmas celebrations in our multicultural household :-)

One humble recommendation: Blog your German texts on Steemit, too, tagging with deutsch and steemit-austria and refer with links to your blog with the whole collection. It will give you more upvotes here and more SEO! Have a nice day!

Thanks, I will! Have a nice day, too! :-)

Welcome to Steemit Theodora and Mercutio! :) You are an expert in a lot of areas, I'm sure you'll add valuable content here in Steemit. I also like traveling with a local because you really get to know the place and its people. :)

Thank you very much! I'm a Jack of all trades, master of none. However, I do hope I can provide you with some interesting content. Travelling with locals, getting to know their way of life, trying to learn their language, smelling and tasting their food, getting a feel for their culture, learning about their history - that's the best kind of travelling. Looking forward to more Japan-related posts from you. I miss Japan a lot :-)

Thanks for checking out my Japan post. I only stayed there for 2 weeks, it's not enough! Where in Japan did you travel to?
Being a jack of all trades is makes you very well-rounded :)

I went to Iwate prefecture. It's lovely. You should definitely go there some time if you get the chance!

Thanks for the tip. I will check out Iwae on my next trip there :) I would love to see Austria too someday! <3

I've already seen that there are Steemit-Meetings in Austria so that would definitely be a great opportunity to combine travelling with meeting fellow Steemians! :-)

There seems to be a lot of Steemian travelers so that is a great idea :)

I am really glad you are here, Theo, and looking forward to know Austria from a local. I already knew a few interesting things from your blog. Keep up great work and enjoy the journey!)
P.S. I always thought that my little fish looks to me with very wise eyes so reading in your post of training a gold fish just confirms they are smart and aware of surrounding.

Oh yes, these wonderful creatures are definitely underestimated by humans.

Servus und willkommen auf Steemit :)

Ich freue mich riesig, so viele unglaublich interessante Austrians kennen zu lernen. I lived outside of my “homeland” for over 40 years and steemit helps me to reconnect with my people and culture. Wirklich nett Dich hier zu sehen und bald Deine Stories zu lesen. Viel Spaß und nicht aufgeben. Am Anfang ist alles bissi schwierig. Du machst alles sich super.

Best intro I saw today, especially thanks to the awesome photos :) Have fun on here @theodora.austria! New follower here :)

Thanks, @herverisson, that's nice to hear! Hope to keep you entertained with further updates about Austria :)

Pretty impressive with al the languages you speak! I am envious...

Great introductory post! I'm following and looking forward to your content, be it Austria, hidden gems, or Guinea Pig. Ok, not so much the Guinea Pig content, but no one's perfect. ;)

Thanks, @braveboat!

No need to be envious, though. If you want to learn a new language, you can do it! (Unless it's Finnish, Xhosa, Hungarian, or German. Those are really hard to learn.)

Guinea pigs are awesome. Trust me, I'm a biologist ;-)
