Summary: Fantom is a layer 1 DAG protocol. As a DAG protocol, transactions on Fantom validate other transactions, creating a web of transactions. Which is much different from a blockchain.
A blockchain, whether proof of work or proof of stake, requires applicants or nodes to verify each transaction in a chronological order, creating a chain of transactions.
Created by a South Korean Scientist, Fantom is a very efficient and scalable protocol, with low fees, and almost instant transactions. It features a steadily growing adoption rate, with over 200 popular dapps currently deployed on it.
I won't say Fantom will be the next Ethereum, but I'm a big fan.
