When I went to uni, my Vista laptop was immediately compromised on the local network (as was almost everyone's). It was infuriating. I had loaded AVG antivirus & Firewall, I think I had Zone Alarm on there, SpyBot S&D, maybe I had Malwarebytes, and certainly a bunch of other things for helping keep me safe but they were no good.
I went to the IT Servicedesk to see if they could help me any further and the lady on the desk (who started chatting my up 🙂 ) couldn't help any more than what I had done so escalated it to 2nd level. Three weeks later they phoned me to ask to see the problem again and showed me their dodgy solution to detecting who was connecting to my laptop. Their solution was to run netstat when I encounterred the problem. I then showed them a batch file I'd already written after the first meeting to continuously log all connections to my laptop and had bound it to my F10 key. That was my real feeling of being hacky
AVG beefed up my security so the problem went away and I never had any more issues, so I didn't get to use it to find the bugger.
