ITA. Eccoci alla seconda parte del viaggio in Camargue. Dopo Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, la città che più mi è piaciuta è stata Aigues-Mortes, nella parte occidentale della Camargue. Il nome Aigues-Mortes deriva dal latino Aquae Mortuae che in italiano si traduce con “acque morte”, dal momento che tutta la zona è circondata da paludi.
ENG. Here we are at the second part of the trip to Camargue. After Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the city that I liked most was Aigues-Mortes, in the western part of the Camargue. The name Aigues-Mortes derives from the Latin Aquae Mortuae which translated is "dead water", since the whole area is surrounded by marshes.

ITA. È una vera fortezza, tutta la città è cinta da ben 1634 metri di mura perfettamente conservate, porte fortificate e torri. La storia di Aigues-Mortes risale fino alle crociate e ai Templari.
Aigues-Mortes è prevalentemente pedonale, le automobili bisogna parcheggiarle all’esterno delle mura.
ENG. It is a true fortress, the whole city is surrounded by 1634 meters of perfectly preserved walls, fortified gates and towers. The history of Aigues-Mortes dates back to the Crusades and the Templars.
Aigues-Mortes is mostly pedestrian, cars need to be parked outside the walls.

ITA. All’interno delle mura la città è molto caratteristica e si respira un’aria provenzale ci sono tantissimi negozietti di souvenirs, tutti molto colorati; il viale principale porta alla piazza centrale, Place Saint-Louis, in cui si trova una fontana con la statua di Saint Louis, il santo re di Francia, tutt’intorno ristoranti con tavolini all’aperto e negozietti.
ENG. Inside the walls the city is very characteristic and there is a Provençal air, there are lots of souvenirs shops, all very colorful; the main avenue leads to the central square, Place Saint-Louis, where there is a fountain with the statue of Saint Louis, the holy king of France, all around restaurants with outdoor tables and small shops.

ITA. A pochi metri dalla piazza c’è la bellissima chiesa di Notre-Dame-des-Sablons (Nostra Signora delle Sabbie) in stile gotico e risalente al 1246. Al suo interno è molto buia e i lumini colorati creano un’atmosfera particolare.
ENG. A few meters from the square there is the beautiful church of Notre-Dame-des-Sablons (Our Lady of the Sands) in Gothic style and dating back to 1246. Inside it is very dark and the colored lights create an atmosphere particular.

ITA. Nel 1893 Aigues-Mortes fu teatro di una strage di operai italiani che lavoravano nelle saline, la stampa francese dell’epoca parlò di 9 morti, la stampa inglese ne riportò 50 ma si pensa che in realtà i morti furono circa 400.
ENG. In 1893 Aigues-Mortes was the scene of a massacre of Italian workers who worked in the saltworks, the French press of the time spoke of 9 dead, the British press reported 50 but it is thought that in reality there were about 400 dead.

ITA. La parte più incredibile di Aigues-Mortes si trova fuori dalle mura. Uscendo dalla città attraverso la porta fortificata verso la palude, ci si trova davanti ad un meraviglioso lago rosa!! Il colore rosa è dovuto a delle particolari alghe presenti sul suo fondale che creano un paesaggio da favola.
ENG. The most incredible part of Aigues-Mortes is located outside the walls. Coming out of the city through the fortified gate towards the swamp, you are facing a wonderful pink lake !! The pink color is due to particular algae present on its backdrop that create a fairytale landscape.

ITA. Per vedere il lago e le saline si può prendere il trenino, il giro dura circa un’ora e il biglietto costa più o meno 8 euro per gli adulti e 6 euro per i bambini e compresa nel biglietto c’è anche la visita al Museo del Sale. Il giro con il trenino passa vicino a montagne di sale da un lato e il lago rosa dall’altro, sembra di essere in un quadro surrealista!!! Più avanti si passa da un piccolo stagno con i fenicotteri, che spettacolo!
ENG. To see the lake and the salt marshes you can take the train, the ride takes about an hour and the ticket costs more or less 8 euros for adults and 6 euros for children and included in the ticket there is also a visit to the Museum of Sale. The ride with the train passes near mountains of salt on one side and the pink lake on the other, seems to be in a surrealist picture !!! Further on we pass by a small pond with flamingos, what a show!

ITA. Sulla strada da Aigues-Mortes verso Saint-Maries-de-la-Mer, si passa per grandissimi campi sabbiosi coltivati a vitigno, da qui nasce il vin de sable (vino di sabbia) della Camargue, dal sapore molto sapido e acidulo, io ho assaggiato quello rosè.
ENG. On the road from Aigues-Mortes to Saint-Maries-de-la-Mer, you pass through huge sandy fields cultivated with vines, from here comes the vin de sable (sand wine) of the Camargue, with a very savory and sour taste, I tasted the rosé wine.
