The Hidden Lazio hides timeless wonders to the most unknown. In our last appointment we talked about Ferentino and its Cyclopean Walls. Today we will move to the nearby Veroli, another small and silent village near Frosinone founded in antiquity by the Ernici, people detached from the ancestry of the Sabines.
Called Verulae in antiquity, this municipium stands on a hill of the Ernici Mountains and the origins of its name are shrouded in mystery: some attribute its name to the word veru which means spit, to indicate its slender shape; others handed down that Verolo was the owner of a large estate of this area. The most widespread theory, however, traces its name to the root ver, from the Greek erúmai (defend, protect), which means a suitable place for defense and surveillance, similarly to what has already been seen for the other villages above these hills, typically used from the Romans for defensive purposes.
Her story, crossed by popes and emperors, sees her first ally of the League Ernica, then great companion of Rome in the fight against Equi and Volsci, thanks to which it will be recognized as municipium for her deeds. The city, of known bishop's tradition and "San Pietro’s Patrimonium", was christianized by Saint Salome, protector of the city and mother of the apostles James the Greater and John the Evangelist, to whom the Basilica is dedicated to conserving the sacred relics.
Perhaps not everyone knows that the Cistercian Order, among the most important in Europe, was founded precisely in Veroli by San Roberto during the mid-twelfth century and resided in the splendid Abbey of Casamari, built in 1035 by four local ecclesiastics.
The Verulan Pomp
They are considered the most important event in the area and their echo resonates throughout the region, attracting tourists from everywhere. Started in 1999 this event takes place every year in coincidence with the last week of July: acrobats, mimes, musicians and jugglers for this short time awaken the village with music and dance.

Il Lazio Nascosto cela meraviglie senza tempo ai più sconosciute. Nel nostro ultimo appuntamento avevamo parlato di Ferentino e delle sue Mura Ciclopiche. Oggi ci sposteremo alla vicina Veroli, un altro piccolo e silente borgo ciociaro fondato in antichità dagli Ernici, popolo distaccatosi dalla stirpe dei sabini.
Chiamata Verulae in antichità, questo municipium si erge su un rilievo dei Monti Ernici e le origini del suo nome sono avvolte nel mistero: alcuni attribuiscono il suo nome alla parola veru che significa spiedo, a indicarne la sua forma slanciata; altri tramandano che Verolo sia stato il padrone di un grande possedimento proprio di questa zona. La teoria più diffusa tuttavia fa risalire il suo nome alla radice ver, dal greco erúmai (difendere, proteggere), che significa luogo idoneo alla difesa e alla sorveglianza, similmente a quanto già visto anche per gli altri borghi che sovrastano queste alture, tipicamente usati dai romani per scopi difensivi.
La sua storia, attraversata da papi e imperatori, la vede prima alleata della Lega Ernica, poi grande compagna di Roma nella lotta contro Equi e Volsci, grazie alla quale verrà riconosciuta come municipium per le sue gesta. La città, di nota tradizione vescovile e “Patrimonium di San Pietro”, fu cristianizzata da Santa Salome, protettrice della città e madre degli apostoli Giacomo il Maggiore e Giovanni l’Evangelista, cui è dedicata la Basilica che ne conservale la sacre reliquie.
Forse non tutti sanno che l’ Ordine Cistercense, tra i più importanti di Europa, venne fondato proprio a Veroli da San Roberto durante la metà del XII secolo e dimorava nella splendida Abbazia di Casamari, costruita nel 1035 da quattro ecclesiastici del posto.
I fasti verulani
Sono considerati l’evento più importante della zona e il loro eco risuona in tutta la regione, attirando turisti da ogni dove. Iniziato nel 1999 questo evento si svolge ogni anno in coincidenza con l’ultima settimana del mese di luglio: acrobati, mimi, musicisti e giocolieri per questo breve tempo risvegliano il borgo con musica e danze.
