I precedenti e le statistiche dicono che sono 9 i precedenti tra Federer e Cilic, con un 8-1 per il campione svizzero, 3-1 negli Slam. L’unica vittoria di Cilic è arrivata a New York in semifinale, nel 2014 vinse il suo unico titolo major. Nel 2017 si incontrarono in finale a Wimbledon dove lo svizzero ebbe la meglio tra i due, da ricordare i problemi fisici del croato.
