An Unforgettable Journey: Part 2

in #japan7 years ago

Today was my first full day in Tokyo.

First impressions:

  • Neon lights everywhere
  • Vending machines every 10 metres
  • Lots of people!

Of course, the first thing I did was go to the fruit store to find some watermelon.

And there it is! The only downside is it costs 5 times what it does here in Australia, at a hefty 3000 yen (27 USD).

First stop of the day, Ueno park. There were street performers everywhere, like this man juggling knives and balancing in a cylinder at the same time!

Ueno lake (Shinobazuno pond), over 300m in diameter, fully covered by water lillies.

Turtles!!! First time seeing one in the wild. Also, if you look closely you can see Japanese Koi carp in the background.

There are many food stalls that sell snacks in Ueno park. This one sells "Mizuame", which is a fruit wrapped in a sticky watery substance. It's very sweet!

For lunch, I had a "Red and Black: half and half curry" near Ueno station. The red had red wine inside, while the black was made of black beer. The rice tastes differently with each curry, but both were surprisingly good!

Next stop, Asakusa! Asakusa is made up of rows and rows of shops, which feature yukatas, souvenirs and even an owl cafe!

Sensoji temple is a famous temple in Tokyo. With a donation of 100 yen, you can ring the bell and make a wish or prayer and it will come true! (Some of the time at least.)

Traditional Japanese dessert called "Taiyaki". Inside is red bean paste and it perfectly combines the crispy batter and the sweet red bean paste into an delicious treat.

I finished off the day by going to the magnificent Tokyo tower.

Amazing view from the tower, with a neverending stream of lights as far as the eye can see.

One Piece store at the tower! Too bad it was closed...
