Testing the new Keychain Multichain (Open Beta)

in #keychain2 months ago (edited)

If you haven't yet heard the news, have a look at Join Keychain Multichain Open Beta and help us take Keychain to the next level!

Quick Start

Before I start on some of my feedback, I will leave you with some quick-start guide/advice:

  1. Export all your keys to an encrypted file, as suggested.
  2. Export your settings (this is mostly needed if you have done manual customisations, like manual RPC nodes, etc). Otherwise, don't bother.
  3. If you have other EVM-enabled extensions on your browser, you might want to disable them on your browser to test this (example, Metamask or Phantom, or others). You can enable them later if you want.
  4. After you have done the above, disable your current Hive Keychain extension on your browser. And grab the beta one that is refered on the open beta post I mentioned above.
  5. Initialise the new openBeta with the same password you have on the one you just disabled. Then import the .kc file you exported in step 1. Then import the settings too that you exported in step 2.

Done, you are ready to roll, all the same things for Hive Dapps, and you can test the new EVM features that I am going to delve into below.

Shoot any questions if you need help.

Where is the source code?

If you want to verify from the source code, the repo/branch is this one. Make sure that if you want to open issues, you add to the title of the issue something like this: "[Multichain BETA] something not working"

Always provide as much information as you can, and do some effort to explain how to reproduce or how you encountered the problem. Include any print-screens if possible.

Good luck!

My first impressions with Hive Keychain Multichain

Well, the Hive part, which I had to verify, is pretty much the same fluid thing where I can do my "next next next next" without any issues. I have been testing for more than 2 weeks now, and I pretty much use it all day, every day.

Either the version pre-compiled by the Hive Keychain team, or manually compiling it myself! Currently only tested on Brave, but it's on my books to test it on Firefox, which might have become less popular over time...

You now have the option to use a side panel (above there are two examples, and I will be mostly pasting screenshots of that mode in this post), which I am not yet very used to... but maybe on my huge screen makes more sense.

I have been digesting it, and the more time it passes, the more it makes sense on large, wide screens. And I am not really sure, but for me it also feels faster when it's on the side... maybe because the eye sees more. Unsure... Let me know what you experience about the side panel, and if you like it or not vs the popup.

You can also view NFTs on EVM, for example, I have these two very old, drawings from my oldest kid when he was younger.

What else can you do that might not yet be "fully working" but from my experience, for simple native chain transactions, it's pretty much flawless.

Sending ETH to somewhere... logging with your ETH wallet on https://altera.magi.eco, for example... to interact with the @magi.network via an EVM account. Yes, I do it via Hive account because it has no fees, but it's possible to do it via an Ethereum account too.

You can also do swaps directly within the same EVM chain type for now. The left picture is on the Base network, and the right picture is on the Ethereum network.

These will potentially evolve and get broader to what other EVM wallets do.

I have been testing and playing with other (EVM-type) chains that are not yet necessarily fully supported, but probably will be along the way by the time this gets into production, such as, for example, BSC and Polygon chains.

You can add custom EVM chains like this...

On custom added chains, to the @keychain EVM wallet side, you can search for contracts of tokens you have on that chain. They are not yet necessarily auto-scanning them for you, but you can search and add them manually, like I have done here for these two tokens on the Polygon chain.

REMINDER: None of this is an endorsement of ANY tokens... 😎

Please keep in mind that EVM things are quite dynamic and sometimes either the RPC nodes change or the explorers. So, keep in mind that if you just copy and paste what I have here, and depending on how far in the future you are checking my post, it might not work anymore.

Also, if you do swaps within EVM chains that you custom add, be aware that those do not yet calculate the best fees for the transactions... so you kind of need to check manually what would be the best fee. Otherwise, you might be paying way more than needed.

For example, just look at this example using me adding Polygon as a customised added chain, and then got a calculated quote 3 times more than when using Metamask. This will get better, as more search for the best providers of gas fee calculators are found, although something for you to have in mind.

This might be complicated for most of my audience, so please don't feel discouraged if you can't understand it. I am always the kind of person who sees "anyone can do it", it's just a matter of time and step by step.

Anyhow, I have been exploring it, just like you can. So far, pretty good...

Still maintains all the functionality you are used to, on the Hive side, and if you want to start playing with EVM accounts you had previously, then this is the perfect segway.

Note that Hive Engine had some problems a couple of weeks ago, and therefore, most of the EVM-type supported chains are disabled at the moment, so don't send any tokens there yet and check Discord for updated news.

What's next testing wise...

Back in the old days, when I was reallllly everywhere. I have enjoyed exploring (where I learned lots) games on WAX, EOS and EVM type chains.

So, this is the perfect time for me to revisit such experiences and update myself with the big projects out there, while testing the @keychain wallet and, within my possibilities, contribute with some value add.

Let's get an example for the sake of referring to a playground arena, and not that I endorse this specific one, but just because it was a quick search. Have a look at some of the "already live" games on https://playtoearn.com/blockchaingames and their respective blockchains, and if that creates enough motivation for you to give it a try on some that the @keychain supports. GO!

Don't expect "free-to-play AND play-to-earn" without any need for payment on EVM-type chains. They usually need you to contribute with some sort of payment before you can "play-to-earn".

These, for me, prove to be great general testing grounds for me to either find problems or validate that things are working the best they can.

But do take it with a grain of salt, as testing is not always an enjoyable journey for most. I love it, but because of my way of learning. Does not have to be like that for everyone.

Either way, I have a couple of games I will try to test keychain multichain on... over the upcoming weeks, and hopefully find an enjoyable one where I can share some more experience on, either through a narrated video or some snaps.

I might need to visit some older servers on Discord to reach out for good candidates to test with EVM wallets. But if you know good ones, you already play with Metamask, do please let me know. I want to give them a try, and it becomes easier for me, as I have someone to interact with here on Hive for any extra context.

One last topic... how many know/tried about this feature of @keychain? Do you like it? What would you add here? Any feedback?

Claim: Hive Keychain's multichain beta.

Stance: support

quote — Still maintains all the functionality you are used to, on the Hive side, and if you want to start playing with EVM accounts you had previously, then this is the perfect segway.

Why it matters: In this post, youare going to learn in-depth personal review of the latest Hive Keychain Multichain open beta wallet. By sharing this post, the Hive community will be able to make a seamless move into testing the huge rollout of the EVM network layers. You will learn how to set up this wallet safely by exporting your current keys prior to the beta test. This post is all about testing the interface including its newly released side panels...

There is going to be some strange overlap with functionality now with what Keychain is doing and Magi when actually using Keychain on Altera.

Were you connecting to Altera as a Hive account on Keychain or as an ETH account? Because we do have multichain wallet interop im assuming that Keychain would be like Metamask right now and you carry in your eth address with Keychain.

I am not going to give up either way... I will be here!

I would like to see adequate commissions before the exchange - if the commissions are higher than required, then no one will use it.

What do you mean by commissions, between chains or within the same chain?

Inter-network fees and keychain fees

Ah ok... yes, if those become lower than exchanges, then there is a huge compelling reason to use this. I would not say no one will use it... but certainly a lot more people indeed and most likely would propagate itself by its own users.

Thanks a lot for this in-depth test and review! Much appreciated!

Still lots to go, but we are heading in the right direction. Integrating other bridges will be another major milestone, especially between Hive and non-Hive chains... just along arbitrage, the potential is huge! But many use cases will start emerging when these new routes exist.

could be handy for those that are in to crypto i guess the extra coin info , an option i would like to see is a pop-up / reminder if people are still voting for a witness that has been inactive for more then 30 days ? so that all those inactive witnesses would drop from the list in the end hopefully ..

We should be careful in defining the "inactive" state here. For example, I use an alternate account to run mine, and rarely do anything else besides signing blocks. Just because it's socially inactive in my case does not reflect the case you are describing.

Maybe something that would be more reasonable would be if it's not signing blocks for more than 30 days, and is an enabled witness. That, in my view, should have more visibility, yes, so that people can make a call about what to do.

Sorry if I missunderstood what you meant by activity.

By inactive i mean not signing any blocks for +30 days , i also use an alt account for my 2nd witness and seeding node @stress.node .

i always find https://primersion.com/witnesses from @primersion very helpfull in keeping an eye on things and https://hive.arcange.eu/witnesses/ from @arcange

Ah, yep, then I am in agreement.

There are a couple more like those. But those are solid ones.

It also would be helpfull if the frontends would hide those old witnesses so people can't vote on the until they have have actually updated the price feed for instance or other signs of being active again.

Price feed only takes place on the top 20 witnesses... so its not useful, just an exercise, same with the APR stance.

Growing as a backup witness should be about learning... it should bring pressure over time, and should bring blockers eventually (top 20) about how you bring security to the chain in terms of production.

I have the luck of being super stable... but someone else might not, and we still (need to) defend the chain stability.

Being decentralised is way harder than people think... even I don't really grasp all the outcomes at the age I am living my life.

Yes, we want everyone to discover that, but it's not easy to teach. And not everyone wants that... even if I keep going...

Reality... is hard sometimes.

So in this keychain version there is a flaw I think in my way if u want to go to the wallet or u need to swap hive or any token u need to go to the browser and then hive engine and then login so I think this is frustrating but if this and this thing terminated the keychain is the best of all but any way love 🤗

I am not sure I understand... can you elaborate on what you can't do?

Note (don't forget this is PC browser extension, not the mobile one):
You can swap already within Hive Keychain without going to Hive-Engine website...

And you can also swap within EVM-compatible wallets... and eventually more will come between Hive and other chains.

Ohh if this is pc extension now this is okay thanks for the support

No worries.
