RE: The Importance of Knowing a Little Bit About Everything

in #knowledge7 years ago

All very true! Having knowledge, understanding and experience that spans multiple fields and even aspects of life is something that puts you in a much better position than an expert if you know how to take advantage of the situation. The narrower your expertise, the narrower the picture you see and as you pointed out, narrowly specialized skills are becoming easier to automate or deal with with the aid of the constantly improving technology. And specific knowledge about details is usually extremely easy to check and access without prior training.

My relatively strange employment experience so far has shown me that the people that do well and are valuable to their organizations are the ones who know how to gain new knowledge about new things when they need to, not the ones who just know many things about something specific. When your experiences spans multiple disciplines, you are more adaptive, flexible and unconventional in your thinking which helps both solve complex interdisciplinary (or interdepartment) problems and perform functions that narrows specialists struggle with immensely. You simply have a more diverse tool belt even if you lack a few precision tools that you rarely need and that you can always add or borrow if they become crucial.

To put it simply, having broader knowledge gives you access to a broader picture. And details have never been easier to check than today.
