에곤 쉴레의 그림은 깊게 패인 상처를 밴드로 싸두었다가 이제 좀 아물었나 싶어 다시 살펴본 그런 느낌을 준다. 그의 방대한 작품 중에서 많은 부분을 차지하고 있는 자화상들은 그의 인간적 고뇌를 담아내고 있다.
아물어 가는 상처와 여전히 남아있는 쓰라림...
그 이중적인 면모를 가장 잘 표현하고 있는 그림들이 아닌가 생각된다.
그는 그의 작품이 단순히 신체를 담아내는 것이 아니라 신체에서 뿜어져나오는 빛을 그린 것이라고 했다.
위 그림은 비교적 색채가 덜 사용되었지만, '신체에서 뿜어져 나오는 빛'이라는 말의 의미를 충분히 느낄 수 있다.
이 인물상은 강렬한 눈빛과 약간은 거만해보이기까지 한 표정을 하고 있다.
넓은 이마에 드리운 그림자와 짙은 주름, 입술과 귀 등에 채색된 붉은 색으로 태초의 야생 느낌마저 든다.
눈에서 뿜어져 나오는 안광에서도 약간의 묘한 느낌을 받게된다. 인체에서 뿜어져나오는 빛이라하면 이런 것을 말하는 걸까, 비교적 마른 몸에 비해 강한 인상을 풍기는 것은 아마도 이러한 안광의 기운에서 느껴지는 그의 예술적인 영감 때문일 것이다. 눈빛 하나로 그림의 분위기가 달라지는 것 같다.
붓자국이 그대로 드러나서 오히려 질감표현이 잘 드러난 듯한 신체는 인물의 마른 몸을 오히려 효과적으로 드러내고 있다.
이렇게 마르고 길게 표현된 몸은 에곤쉴레 특유의 인체묘사 방법이다. 약간은 병적인 느낌이 드는 그의 화풍은 이러한 표현의 결과인 것 같다.
