Visit The most secured border in the world (North & South Korea) DMZ JSA

in #kr7 years ago

Hi, here is a brief overview of my one-day visit from the border between South Korea and North Korea (DMZ or The Korean Demilitarized Zone - the buffer zone between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea))... The tension was quite intense.

All photos have been taken by me and I add the link to my youtube video at the end (over 102K views !!).

After a meeting with an American military soldier on the procedures to follow, here we are in front of North Korea! The blue buildings is part of The Joint Security Area (JSA). JSA is the only portion of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where North and South Korean forces stand face-to-face. It is often called the "Truce Village". The border is located in the middle of the 2 blue buildings.

The "Bridge of no return" crosses the Military Demarcation Line between North Korea and South Korea. It was used for prisoner exchanges at the end of the Korean War in 1953. The name originates from the final ultimatum that was given to prisoners of war brought to the bridge for repatriation: they could either remain in the country of their captivity or cross the bridge to return to their homeland. However, once they chose to cross the bridge, they would never be allowed to return, even if they later changed their minds.

Propaganda village or Kijŏngdong. The official position of the North Korean government is that the village contains a 200-family collective farm, serviced by a child care center, kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, and a hospital. However, observation from the South suggests that the town is an uninhabited village built in the 1950s in a propaganda effort to encourage South Korean defection and to house the DPRK soldiers manning the network of artillery positions, fortifications and underground marshalling bunkers that surround the border zone.
