say/tell/talk/speak

혹시 '말하다'나 '얘기하다'라는 단어를 영어로 사용하때 너무 헷갈려하죠?

일단, say,tell,talk,speak 단어는 다 말하다라는 의미가 있지만 사용하는 방식이 너무 다릅니다. 이 단어를 구분해서 엄청 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 방법을 알려드릴게요.

Say, Tell
얘기의 내용

say와 tell 단어를 사용하때 개인이 뭐하고 얘기했던 그말 자체에 대한 얘기입니다.

A: What did do you last night in your bedroom? I could hear you through the walls.
B: I was talking to my friend in America and she said something funny.

A: What did your teacher tell you after class?
B: He told me if I skip class one more time, I will get a detention.

Talk, Speak
말을하는 행위

talk와 speak 단어를 사용할때 사람이 말하는 행동이나 행위라는 의미가 있습니다. 정확히 말하려면 '대화하다'라는 뜻입니다.

A: Hey, Mike! I need to talk to you about something.
B: What is it?
A: It is a secret so don't tell anybody. (아무한테나 얘기하지말라고)(말의내용)
B: Ok. I won't tell anybody. Tell me what you have to say.

A: I spoke to my boss yesterday and it wasn't good.
B: Wow! Your boss isn't easy to speak with. What did you tell him?(말의 내용)
A: I spoke to him about quitting work.
B: Not an easy thing to talk about. (speak말고 talk를 사용한 이유는 talk가 어떤 사람과 대화를 나눌때 talk를 사용합니다).

언어에 대해 얘기할때 speak라는 말을 사용합니다.

A: How many languages can you speak?
B: I can speak about 5 languages.

전화를 할때 speak라는 말을 사용해야됩니다.

A: Is this Andrew?
B: Yes, who is speaking? (who is talking가 틀립니다)

이제부터 say, tell, talk, speak 차이점을 잘 기억하시고 영어로 말할때 올바른 방식으로 말했으면 좋겠습니다.
