I always find stairs, doors, alleyways rather mysterious: quite literal "portals" to an other place. Often it is not clear what is beyond: good, bad, wonderful or horrendous, it creates suspense and anticipation The same applies to these stairs. I saw them a couple times before and I knew what is behind them, because I have walked on the other side many times( although you can not see the stairs from there), but still I wondered if there was not some hidden castle or mysterious building beyond them when I looked up to them from the road. Fancy is most times stronger than reason!
