Countries With The Most Languages Spoken

in #language7 years ago (edited)

Let us learn about top linguistically diverse countries.

I came from the country where there are many main languages, that is also included in the list too.

There are some nations in the world, where we can see an overwhelming amount of languages spoken.

The country with the highest number of languages spoken is “Papua-New Guinea” with at least 820 different languages. Papua-New Guinea is a rural country where almost 90% of the people live in rural areas. Moreover, because of Papua New-Guinea's rough terrain and its deep valleys, there's a restricted amount of communication among all of those isolated rural community. This is the reason, why the remains such an amazing amount of linguistic variety today, without any specific languages sort of growing in affecting and dominating the others. English is only spoken by nearly 2 % of the population but it is widely employed in business and it is assumed that the language of education.

The second most linguistically diverse nation in the world is Indonesia, which is situated right next to Papua New Guinea. Actually, half of the island of New Guinea is situated inside Indonesia. Nearly 740 different languages are spoken in Indonesia. However, there is only one official language that is Bahasa Indonesia, or Indonesian.

The third most linguistically diverse nation in the world is Nigeria with 516 languages spoken. However, English is used as a common language, particularly in the urban areas.

And next, comes India with 427 native languages including 22 official languages. The main language is Hindi but sometimes English, which was left behind by the British colonisers, in exchange for a huge amount of India's resources.

This may sound surprising but that is the USA with 311 languages. We think the USA as an English-speaking country. But remember that there are over 100 native languages in the USA, although many of them have a very limited number of speakers these days. Also, there are almost 200 different languages spoken by immigrants to the USA.

Altough there are many other languages that are spoken in above mentioned countries, my list is limited to majorly spoken languages. Please comment below if i am missing any information.
