The youngest letter of the Russian language

in #language5 years ago

Linguistic innovations are sometimes quite significant. You don't need to go far for examples. After the spelling reform of 1918, when the letter b was removed at the end of many words, Leo Tolstoy's novel War and peace "lost weight" by 70 pages. Well, today, on the day of Slavic writing and culture, let's talk about another innovation that has become firmly embedded in our lives. Before you – the youngest letter of the Russian language.

E-my! In fact, you should have written "E-my", because it is a vowel letter. Yes, what a good one! When I saw the monument to this vowel in Ulyanovsk, I ran to take pictures.

It was difficult to get to the monument — it is quite popular among tourists. And when I read that Ulyanovsk is a UNESCO literary city, I respected it even more.

I will add that the letter was invented by the famous Ekaterina Dashkova. On November 29, 1783, one of the first meetings of the newly created Russian Academy of Sciences was held in the house of the Director of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Princess Ekaterina Romanovna Dashkova. Derzhavin, Fonvizin, Knyazhnin and other famous writers gathered there. Together they debated about the complete Slavic-Russian dictionary, which later became famous.

At one point, Dashkova asked academics if they could spell the word "Christmas tree". And then she put it down on paper it uttered the word "yolk". The Director of the Academy of Sciences asked whether it is legal to depict one sound with two letters? As a result, Dashkova suggested using the new letter " e ""to Express words and reprimands that begin with this consent, as matiory, iolka, iozh, IOL". The initiative was supported, and later fixed officially. Oh, how.

As for the " E "I once heard that it is better not to write the letter" E " in Newspapers because of some typographical rules. Rubbish. Personally, I try to make notes when I need to. And nothing, everything then looks normal on the page. Another thing is that on the computer keyboard, the letter is pushed into a corner, which is really inconvenient. But who knows, maybe this injustice will be corrected someday. By the way, I have heard that Russian programmers have developed a program that itself adds two dots to the "E" if necessary. We need to search and try.
