For the longest time I was trying the wrong techniques for language learning. I was using the traditional methods that I learned when I was taking Spanish classes in highschool and college.
Using flash cards and writing down vocabulary with definitions in English. I suppose when you literally know zero Spanish this is the only way to develop a foundation. But, if you have some basis of vocabulary and training with verbs, but you just need to take the next step in fluency I would like to share with you what I feel is the best approach.
I will preface this by saying that I am not a specialist. I have only spent a small amount of time researching methods for learning. All I can say is that this really worked and is working for me. It is not enough to just move to a Spanish speaking country. You don’t just learn through osmosis. Surely at a certain point you will reach fluency, but if you want get the most rewards in the shortest amount of time, you have to focus your efforts.
First suggestion is to create social situations where you are surrounded by the language. Before I made any friends I was just going to public areas where conversation is promoted. I would sit alone at a bar and listen in on others conversations, or go to coffee shops and do the same. Once to develop relationships with the Spanish speaking community, force yourself into those situations where everyone is speaking Spanish. Don’t be discouraged. Keep smiling, even though you don’t understand. The point is, it is not enough to just learn the language in writing you have to practice hearing it. Another great way to hear the language is to subscribe to Spanish language learning podcasts such as Duolingo and Conversations in Spanish.
