Dominus vōbīscum

"Dominus vōbīscum"

This phrase that you'll often hear at Mass means:

"The Lord be with you."

•Dominus means "Lord"
•vōbīscum means "with you"

The word vobiscum is made up of two separate words "vobis", meaning "you (all)", and "cum", meaning "with."

There are two important things to note about this phrase:

  1. Latin does not use a definite article, so "the" is inserted in the English translation based on context.

  2. The verb "be" here is implied. It is not present in the Latin structure. This is a regular occurrence for this verb.
