Have you heard the advice to tell a someone "to be quieter" rather than telling them to "stop yelling"?
It seems the brain focuses on the last thing it hears. If you want quiet, do you really want to reinforce the yelling?
It's similar with building any habit. If we keep focusing on what we're not doing, we'll continue to see what we're not doing.
But if we develop the habit of finding what IS working, we'll start seeing that more and more.
Today, take some time to reflect on a habit you're trying to create. For example, let's say you're wanting to get better at sales calls. Think about a time that you did do sales calls well. If that's too hard, think of a time when you did one sales call well! Then ask yourself, "What went right?"
Some things to pay attention to might include:
- What were the conditions that made the calls work?
- Time of day?
- Did you schedule the time in advance or did you go with the flow?
- Your energy level?
- In your office or out of your office?
- Did you have the contact information printed or did you look it up each time?
- Even if you only did one real call in the last couple weeks, what went right?
As you increasingly figure out what went right, you'll be able to set up the conditions for your success. And you'll start building that habit you're wanting to build.
