Price slashing could be the best term to explain China's projector market in the year 2007. Projectors in China had for ages been sold at a range of prices between RMB 20, 000 to 30, 000 for more than 10 years. Understandably, large part of the sales are to institutional customers, few people would purchase a projector for individual use. Though institutional earnings will still dominate the projector marketplace in 2008, many manufacturers and sellers are still hoping that there could be project sales to families.

Consequently, projector businesses have been trying to market low price models since 2007. As an example, a brand-new model was priced at RMB 14, 000 when it first came to the marketplace in mid-2007, but its cost has been slashed to just RMB 8, 000 towards the end of the year. Such scenario is similar to the DVD-R marketplace in early 2005, when the cost of a typical DVD-R unit has been cut from RMB 1 million to 499 within 3 months. But despite many organizations are talking up household projectors, that institutional sales are still ruling the marketplace has determined that producers won't spend an excessive amount of real effort on household projectors.

As one distributor has pointed out, he'd rather stock one million commercial timers than inventory 10 household projectors. And on the other hand, the main projector consumption segment in China, namely the education market, is experiencing a downturn in projector demand. As it may take some time for this marketplace to recover, projector organizations are now turning to the emerging commercial marketplace. This is also a situation that may benefit those smaller projector brands. Different out of other commercial projector users, educational facilities are characterized by their collective offers and insensitivity to prices. Plus they're frequent users of projectors requiring high level of aftermarket services. This has long made leading international brands favorites of educational facilities. Consequently many later comers, small to medium brands and local brands have failed to win educational marketplace shares.
