Look at a Legend

This is a series that I want to start on a weekly basis. I love basketball and am pumped up as there is a new tribe on the block(chain) - Dunk Social... The NBA has no shortage of legends, and I will be reminding you about them each week. I also am a sports card collector / investor (for those that don't know), so I will be talking about the value of cards associated with the legend of the week. Who knows, when BTC hits your targeted sell date, maybe some basketball rookie cards would be a nice substitute for a stable coin?

I figured Karl Malone would be a very good player to start with. You can ask who is the best power forward of all time, or you can ask who is the best power forward... Post Malone.

The Mailman

Karl Malone had an amazing career perhaps overshadowed by one NBA player who had a slightly better career (guess who?). Regardless, Malone proved to everybody that he could play basketball. A mainstay with the Utah Jazz almost his entire career, number 32 played ball. On his career, he averaged 25 ppg (highest season was 31 ppg), over 10 rebounds per game and 3.6 assists per game and shot nearly 52% from the field.

He was a 14x all star, a 2 time league MVP, hit ALL NBA 1st team 11 times, and was on the second or third 5 times. All defensive first team 3 times... All star game MVP 2 times.

One accolade he never achieved was winning an NBA title. He made it to the dance 3 times, 2 times with the Jazz and once with the Lakers. All 3 of those attempts fell short.

More Accolades

Karl Malone has more points scored than every player in NBA history with the exception of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. It is worth noting that Lebron James is hot on his heels and would likely bump Malone to #3 all time in another season.

Karl Malone also holds the record for most free throws made and most free throws attempted. The man knew how to get to the line!

Rookie Card

This is the iconic 1986 fleer basketball set. Rookie cards include Jordan, Ewing, Malone, Barkley, Olajuwon, Dominique Wilkins and more...

If you want to pick up a Gem Mint (PSA 10) Karl Malone Rookie Card, you can expect to pay somewhere in the $4000 - $6500 USD range. Think 0.2 BTC, or 2-3 ETH. Of course, you could settle for a 9.5 or a 9 for around $1000.

Look for more

As mentioned, I am going to post a legend every week. We will take a look at some stats, accolades and talk about diversifying our portfolios into some basketball cards.

Sort:

I like these types of posts, where they talk about the numbers, statistics and achievements of the players.
It's a great Post.
I just don't agree with you, for me the best power forward is Tim Duncan

Thank you. There is a pretty good argument for Duncan, but you cannot even have the conversation without Karl Malone's name in the hat.

This is a good topic to debate, I will take the opportunity to make a post so that all of the tribe tell us which is their favorite player

Ya man! I would be all over that.

We accept donations of Malone rookie cards for putting the tribe together.... LOL

He is an under the radar legend in my opinion as nobody ever really talks about him and his scoring prowess. Everyone is always saying how Bron is chasing Kareem, but he's really chasing Malone first! Nice post, looking forward to seeing more

Thanks! Ya, Malone is undeniably one of the best players to play. He never won a championship and that is the big strike against him (and that is Jordan's and Olajuwon's fault). As far as putting up numbers... he really did that.

Bron needs to catch Malone first (and he very well could next season) before we even talk about the next hurdle.

I had that 1986 set briefly, I held onto it for a year or so and then sold it for double. Had I held onto it...

Basketball rookie cards are the only assets that have been consistently competing with crypto. Most sought after rookies are up at least 10x in the last few years.

Basketball is not so popular in my country. The most popular sport is soccer and badminton. However, there is a basketball competition that is sponsored by some banks. Basketball is sport for city people. People from rural areas have no basketball field. That is the problem I think.

I grew up in a rural area and played a LOT of ball. It is a problem. A few hundred dollars is all it takes to set up a good net, then all you need is a ball and the whole neighbourhood has something constructive to do.
