I was transfigured, right at the start of the gang. The game was going to be a challenge, if the story went as I thought it did. We all knew the girl that was going to be in this, but no-one was sure who it was going to be. No-one except me. That was why I'd chosen to be the one to play it, you see.
I'd known her for as long as I'd been in the game. I think she was an old friend of the Weird Girl that had started it, but the thought that she was transfigured didn't bother me none at all. I mean, what could I say? I was an outcast, the only one in the gang who was marginalized and pushed away from society, from friends, from family - even from other subcultures. Everyone just picked on me, and it seemed like they had been for a while.
Now, in the game, I was the only one who was willing to hang around with the transfigured. I think it might have been because I'd interact with her so much, or maybe even because I'd always liked seeing that she didn't change - that she was just there, and she'd always be there. And I liked seeing her with the rest of the gang, and I liked the friends that I made. It was a weird thing, but there was indeed a kind of friendship there.
So, I was transfigured the very first day, and the rest of the gang wandered into the room where I was laid out as though it was the only possible thing they could do. We did not clap or cheer, but we applauded when they left the room.
And then, no-one else transfigured for the next two months. They kept coming into the room to see me, no matter how much I had to stare at the floor. I kept up the good manners though, because I knew they didn't go upstairs after only two months, and they definitely didn't go for the rest of the time.
The transfiguring had stopped soon after, but I think that was pretty much just because I wasn't held up as the talk of the place anymore. And then, the one time I caught a glimpse of that girl to the side of the room, I knew that she'd been transfigured. She was the only one there one time, and we could speak privately in the hallway. She told me that the rest of the gang had gone, but she was going to be staying for a while.
"It's because of you, you know. Because of the kind things you've done for me."
"Excuse me?"
"When the rest of the gang left me here, you were the only one who stayed. Everyone else thought it was because I knew you, but it wasn't."
"I don't understand."
"You have your own choice to make, Watson."
"What choice?"
"To transfigure or not to transfigure."
"I don't really understand."
"I said it was going to be tough! You and I are in this together now. I can't leave you alone in this life, okay? It's my turn now. There's no way that you're the only person I can rely on."
"So I'll be transfigured?"
"That's an entirely different thing. Without me, you can do whatever you want."
"If I'm transfigured, I will be your friend? I'll stay with you?"
"You'll stay because you have to. Because you want to. Just don't regret it."
"I can resist too?"
"As much as you want. You can go up to the weird girl, and nothing will happen. Just keep it open if you don't want to.
