The War on Spices

This year there has been a dramatic increase in demand for turmeric in the market, a spice that is believed to offer medicinal properties. As people have turned to eat better, exercise more, take more supplements etc, in any effort to boost their immune system that has also meant turning to things like turmeric if it might help.

When supply for this product became uncertain for some regions this year that meant that a new black market for turmeric was born. In places like Sri Lanka, the government there has banned imports for some spices including things like nutmeg, ginger, and turmeric, because they want to try and improve their own domestic markets for these items. They decided to make that move back in Dec 2019.

This year a bag of 100kg smuggled turmeric is allegedly being exchanged for around 1kg of gold.

A variety of turmeric products have been confiscated this year by authorities.

They have also arrested people who have been involved in the distribution of the illegal spice that is now banned from coming into some regions.

Authorities are violating the natural rights not only of those to grow and sell with others in the region who need turmeric, but they are also violating the rights of those who want to buy it and are prevented now from getting that easy access.

The state doesn't need to use violence to keep other turmeric products from coming in before actors in that region could choose to move to build and foster their own local turmeric market. Is the government really ready to kill anyone over turmeric? Because that is what this war on spices could lead to, as they continue to enforce these unjust restrictions on one spice or another in that area. It isn't just to use violence in order to prevent other competitors from coming to market, at the end of the day the people should get to decide for themselves what turmeric they want to buy and vote for with their dollars.

Instead, with restrictions like this, the government is saying they know what's best for you and they want to decide what limited options you should have in the market based upon their own prejudice and subjective understanding. That in no way helps to make things better for the people, when their liberty is undermined in such a manner on a broad scale for something as simple as turmeric.

What country is this? Are you in Sri Lanka?

I was about to ask the same? ;)

It's like what's happening in Mexico over avacados. The drug cartels are moving in because of a jump in demand here in the US, due to people wanting to eat healthier. Prices are spking everywhere. Sombody's making a killing.
